This mod (Frankie Mod / Frankenstein Mod) is at least over a year old now, but I just recently discovered it. Apparently, this repair/mod was found in a Sony refurbed PS3 Phat that was BC.

Essentially, the original PS3s were shipped with a 90nm RSX GPU chip. As you all are aware, it was very unreliable and caused many YLODs.

Then the slim models shipped with a 65nm and 40nm RSX GPU chip.

Well, what Sony did for warranty work on the Phat models was replaced the 90nm RSX chip with a 40nm RSX chip and applied some code work revisions to get the chip to work with the motherboard.

Well, low and behold, the gaming community has been able to reverse engineer what Sony had done and is bringing these old BC models back to life.

Just think, a single PS3 that's BC, and a PS5 will provide you with 5 generations of PlayStation. That's incredible.

If you have one stuffed in your closet, take a look at these repair shops. It's going to be costly, but it might be worth it. Depending on who you go with, it could be a $400-600 repair. Some Frankie Consoles on eBay can be about that same price.

PS3 Model Information

Some of those places have eBay shops where you would purchase your repairs while also offering PS3s with the mod already completed. What most of them do is source a 65nm or 40nm chip from a slim model since you can't really purchase these chips new off the shelf. Be aware though, the repair isn't 100% successful. The repair process itself causes risks to damaging the board due to excessive heat and desoldering.

In other news, any PS3 can be backwards compatible nowadays with CFW (custom firmware). It's not 100% reliable due to the structure of some games, but CFW for PS3s now include a PS2 emulator that will attempt to play PS2 games.

Here's a list of compatible PS2 games that can run on the CFW emulator:

That's kinda neat. I have a launch 60GB PS3 that still works, but I can get nervous every time I use it that it's finally about to die. Still has all of my original PS1 FF save data. Lots of good memories there.

I had a friend with a backwards compatible PS3, and from what I remember, the PS2 backwards compatibility was not great.

A lot of games had glitches, frame dips, or were otherwise unplayable on a PS3.

I bought a mini-PC that I use as a PS2/PSX/Dreamcast Classic console and can upscale most games to 1080p.

Sounds like he had a PS3 that emulated PS2 games.

CECHA01 (60gb) - actual PS2 hardware
CECHB01 (20gb) - actual PS2 hardware
CECHC01 (60gb) - actual PS2 hardware
CECHE01 (80gb) - software emulation

What’s weird is that the emulator provided a better picture, but worse playback than the hardware versions.

You really only have to worry about that if you start to see fracturing of the graphics or if you notice the fans are extremely high.

You can install custom firmware and use an overlay that will tell you what your temps and fan speeds are.

People have also extended the life of their consoles by deluding the cpu and fax chips and reapply thermal paste. You could look into that as well.

I love the ps3. It’s a really great system. I have one to this day that I take really good care of because of how many games they refuse make playable from that era on PS5 or PC

Me too! Mine sounds like a fricking jet taking off when you start it up, but it still runs like a champ

My (now) wife has an OG PS3 fat. It got ylod at one point and I got it working again by basically disassembling it down to the motherboard putting some flux on it and baking it in the oven on as low as it would go for an hour or something. It's been a long time. But dammit if it didn't get it working again. Fans go vroooom any time you turn it on nowadays but it does work.
