As an RE veteran and somenoe very famliar with RE2 I said 'what the heck, I'll do hardcore'
Yeah... probably 20-30 minutes in I restarted on normal. I would STRONGLY advise not picking Hardcore on your first playthrough unless you are not going to tilt at dying QUITE a lot while you learn where the various pitfalls and trouble spots are. I will definitely do a hardcore run later, but armed with knowledge of where to go and what to do.
Guessing I'm about 2/3rd done with Leon's story.
A few quick non-spoilery thoughts.
1. To my surprise they actually DON'T provide much basckstory or lore or world building at all. You're just kinda thrown in with no real context. If you've never played any RE game before, you might actually want to read the story of what happened in RE1.
2. The game is SIGNIFICANTLY different from the original RE2. This remake is way more different from its original than the RE1 GameCube remake was. Outside of the layout of a few rooms in the police station, almost nothing is the same. Other than knowing some of the main story beats, being familiar with RE2 won't help or spoiler you at all.
3. Slightly surprised with the almost complete lack of music. I know why they did it, definitely makes things more tense to be mostly silent, however RE2 had a couple really iconic tracks I would have liked to hear at least once, like for example when you enter the Front Hall for the first time. Probably a scarier game the way they did it, but the nostalgia dork inside me would have appreciated it.
4. Even on normal enemies do significant damage. Lickers will absolutely tear you a new a-hole. You're really not supposed to get hit or tank hits. On Hardcore you can die in like 2 hits from "easy" mobs and get 1 shotted by the big boys.
5. Zombies are hard as hell to kill. Even on normal with headshots they just keep coming and keep getting up. They also move faster and are more unpredictable. They no longer just steadily walk towards you in a straight line, lots of shambling, weaving, and lunging.
6. Thanks to 4 & 5, combat feels much more tense and high stakes. The aiming system is pretty cool, it somewhat forces you to be still and calm to get off headshots, while you really don't want to be still.
7. When Mr. X shows up, oh fricking boy, talk about raising the tension level through the roof.
Pretty outstanding so far.

One other note, really respect the game's suggested brightness settings.
I'm on PS4 regular and like many games they give you a few brightness adjustment panels with instructions.
I tend to like to have my brightness just slightly up more than is suggested in many games, but I was getting this weird and noticeable checkboarding effect when Leon was using the flashlight in dark places and I suspected it was because I wasn't following their brightness adjustment settings exactly as directed. I adjusted it per exactly what they wanted and it went away.

Game downloaded. Can’t wait to get back home in about 5 hours to play it. I’ve seen people say Mr. X is one of the most terrifying things they’ve experienced in gaming

It's definitely been the highlight of the game so far for me, I'm nearing the very end of Leon's chapter.

really?? it's that hard?
man, i feel like I'm going to have to try it first anyway lol.
Glad the Mr. X reception is positive. I was worried that he would overstay his welcome and become annoying.

It just felt extremely punishing, I forsaw it being more tedious than rewarding. And I'm somebody who loves difficulty in my games (thus me picking it initially).
Given how tanky the zombies are you'll probably be figuring out how to strategically run from almost everything when possible and dying and restarting from a save point through sheer trial and error.
Feel free to give it a shot for your first go if you want. No harm in trying it out, you may have better luck at the start and get into the groove.
Playing hardcore as a second play through, with knowledge of how the game flows seems way less tedious and more fun, so that's what I plan on eventually doing.

Going to try to pick this up at redbox when they restock today. Assuming its a ~10 hour game like the original, I should be able to knock it out over the weekend.

Kind of the point I would imagine. Leon and Claire have no idea what is going on.

I went very slow and methodical with Leon and it's gonna take 8-9 hrs for his part for me. The Claire run will probably clock in less since I know the geography.
So yeah, 10-15 hours to just finish both stories on normal mode is totally feasible even without rushing.

Can you recommend headphones or 5.1 speakers with this one?

It's not that bad. Shoot zombies in the legs and it cuts their HP in half.

I played over an hour and I’m on the edge of my seat the whole time
I hate it and love it at the same time lol

I'm disappointed they removed the greatest death in the series (Irons getting ripped apart by Birkin in Claire B).

In Claire A right now, just finished the Sherry section and am heading back to the parking garage gate.
Mr. X got on my nerves last night. I hadnt killed any of the zombies in the library and had to do the puzzle with all of them + X hounding me. It was like a 30min ordeal of me parading them around

Do y’all have any tips for ammo? I’ve been killing every zombie I’ve met but it seems like I may be better off just running unless I have to kill them because I’m constantly out of ammo.
Posted on 1/26/19 at 10:29 am to Mystictiger
I’ve barely killed any zombies. Only shoot when I’m stuck, and even then, I’ll shoot them to stagger and then slip by
