Playstation 5 Could Be Backwards Compatible with ALL PS Generations

New patent filing hints that PS5 could be one-stop shop for all your Sony games.

The PS5, PlayStation 5, or whatever Sony plans to call its successor to the PS4, will be backwards compatible with older PlayStation games if a patent filing from the company is to be believed. What this means is, the PS5 could possibly work with PS4, PS3, PS2, and PS1 games. It's an interesting move from Sony if it gets implemented as it could spell the end of remasters or re-releases that this generation of consoles is notorious for. It possibly hints that Sony is confident of the first-party games and exclusives we'll see on the PS5 too.

Backwards Compatible what a novel concept.
It looks like their in-house should be good to go, but they will probably run into the same issues Xbox did with 3rd party.

Would be smart and a seller if they did this. At this point it’s really annoying having to break out old systems every time I want to play a classic. Being able to confine those systems to the closet for good (or just sell them if you like) would be awesome and guarantee I buy a PlayStation 5.
I’ve owned every Playstation, except opted for Xbox One over PS4. This would bring me back in to the fold no doubt, and would allow me to play some awesome games I missed on this current generation (God of War 4 especially).
All that said, I’ll believe it when I see it. Sounds too good to be true.

If it is not on Xbox One, it will not be on PS5. EA has to agree to the backwards play.

This is great and all but I wonder how this would work with digital, I rarely do disc based anymore

I’ve never really understood the appeal for backwards compatibility. Im not really interested in playing games that are 15+ years old. I bought a next gen for a reason.

There are some amazing games that were totally under the radar for each generation.
PS1 - Legend of Dragoon/Alundra/Syphon Filter series immediately come to mind.

Microsoft kind of already laid out the footprint, so Sony does not have to put much thought into the logistics

The current way based off the MSFT model
-Any digital download purchased on PS4 or PS3 could be re-downloaded on PS5.
-If you have a disk, disk is required to play. Even though it downloads the game onto the HD. That is to prevent sharing disks though.
3rd party have to to agree and the original article is factually incorrect that it will prevent remasters. Remastered games are extra revenue for 3rd party. Sony in-house games should all be available.

Some of us older people reserve the right to want to play games from a better time when games were complete and micro-transactions did not exist

I mean I guess, I’m 31 so I’ve been playing video games for a while. I know each generation had a few gems that might have some replay value, but I think honestly if I picked them up I would just get bored after the first hour or so.

Native or emulation?
And I have no problem with remasters. Taking a 720p/30 fps game and making it 1080p/60 and selling for $20 or so is okay.

Yeah there is zero chance that happens.
You know a game is dead when EA turned off the in-game jersey micro transactions.

When where you born, like 1988. You did not even come to gaming age until like 1995ish.
You know nothing Bonkers119, now get off our lawn.

So right around when the first playstation released. Why can't he have an opinion on backwards compatibility for playstation?
With that said I do go back and play old games and I enjoy doing so.

emulation
That was one of the one of the tech feats to make it work on X1. Only way to do it for PS1-PS3, especially the PS3 games. PS4 should be native though.

Yup. Some remakes have really benefited from a little extra care added.
