I feel like it's to many years post-release to have the kind of attachment to the game that many people do. I know all the major plot points that would've been mind blowing in 1997 (Aeris dies, Cloud's memories are actually Zack's memories, etc), but it has been a pretty enjoyable playthrough thus far.

FF7 seems to be the first FF game that trends towards character progression being incomprehensible with the Materia system, but it's not all that hard to understand. Just annoying to have to keep swapping out Materia every time the game forces a certain party member on you.

Some parts of it seem pretty obtuse without a guide (just how are you supposed to find out where to get the key to the temple of the ancients without looking it up?), but the pre-rendered backgrounds, low poly character models, and OST have a lot of charm. I would say SE lost their way with the FF franchise after X, but can we just have the team that developed DQ11 make Final Fantasy games from now on?

I read a guide that said go to the trophy room inside of the Gold Saucer.

Supposedly there is some house somewhere on the map where you talk to a dude who says he sold it to the dude at the gold saucer or something.

Well something happened to the company after X.
(It was not SE until after X)

I wonder if they could have kept it up without the merger.

Well they started messing with the formula during X. I don't think the Enix merger really caused the problem.

FF really isn't that big in Japan compared to the US where it is (was?) huge. SE just tries to hard to cater towards US markets with Final Fantasy whereas they stick to what works with DragonQuest.

I think XIV might be worse than XIII in a lot of ways. XIV was never meant to be a mainline Final Fantasy game. It was probably meant to be more akin to Kingdom Hearts or Crisis Core.

The game spent years in development hell, and we ended up with a game that was only around 50% finished. They drip-fed paid DLC to fill out holes in the main story, but not having played through any of the DLC, the plot makes absolutely zero sense.

What do you mean here? Sakaguchi and Suzuki were essentially ran off because of the failure of "the Spirits Within"

Yoichi Wada started running things after this and closed the Enix merger. His business plans changed how FF was developed. Quality then went down.

Not saying Enix stepped in and ruined them but the business plan and leaders changed at that time and Square Enix has never been the same developer as Square Soft.

You mean FF XV I am sure. But I agree for the most part. The reason Enix wanted to merge with Square was because they wanted the western sales of FF.

Square nearly went bankrupt after the Final Fantasy film (2001). Enix had to bail them out.

FFXV is second best selling game in series in the West, so it's definitely still important.

Definitely true. It was intended to be an companion to the XIII universe, but they shifted the project several times in its development. It's a problem that compounded on itself because Square kept using their development teams to build engines out of scratch instead of just using engines that every one was using like Unreal.

I really don't know how this lie got started. The character episode DLCs were done because they were the most requested item when they did player surveys after the game released. Because the #1 requested feature was to play as all of the party members. Then they went from there to add things from other IP (Assassin's Creed event, etc). They definitely tried to do some GaaS stuff and see how they could do with an RPG. Outside of the Kingsglaive movie, I do not feel that anything that was meant to be there was missing. The plot isn't that hard to grasp having seen the movie and then playing the game immediately after.

Yep, Square could do no wrong before then.

They would have survived it. Square board panicked and put the wrong man in charge after that.

They were in a very bad spot though. Sony also helped out and purchased like 8 or 9% of the company to assist in keeping it afloat.

I think it was more than that. Like 18% of the company.

But the merger was a failure to Square. The Market capitalization ended up being less than what it was at time of the merge. And the Square IP's went downhill (In my opinion).

Well they made Dragon Quest XI, so they can still make good JRPGs. They're just not sure what to do with the Final Fantasy property these days.

I'm at the point where I hope the FF7 remake never happens because they'll just frick it up.

FF7 may be my favorite PS game. It’s up there with Resident Evil.
