Why does RE consistently kill it the first 3/4 of a game and then shite the bed at the end?

This is a very real phenomenon with RE games. The last section is almost always the weakest.

I think there's probably a few reasons.

They almost all do a locale switch and the new locale simply isn't as interesting or flushed out as the primary ones. I get the feeling many of these finale locales are afterthoughts. They have their really good idea for the main setting and the bulk of the game is set there but the other locales are not thought out as much.

They also seem to want to end on a grand finale, and lean more into action and spectacle and completely away from horror. They almost always completely eliminate tension in the final acts.

I think it’s just really hard to maintain the quality of an experience that RE usually opens with for the length of the entire game.

The RE4 remake comes the closest imo which is impressive because it’s like 20 hours long which is probably by far their longest game.

I didn’t really like RE8 that much overall though. 1st person isn’t really my thing anymore so it has to be something very special like RE7 for me to really get into it.

If someone had never played any of these games and wanted to get into them, is there a good jumping in point later on in the series or do you need to start all the way at RE1?

In the wrong person to be asking

I just love the old ones from original PlayStation from childhood.

I would start with REmake if you can, then just work your way up through the remakes in numbered order

Yes, it's on sale on PSN right now for $4.99. It's gonna be a little different from the other remakes because it's much older but it is still a beautiful game and the definitive RE experience. Fixed cameras, great puzzles, everything.

The remakes of 2/3/4 are over the shoulder and much more modern, mechanically

7 and 8 are first person but still very good (especially 7)

It's really old but those gorgeous backgrounds have aged really well. The lighting was really ahead of its time

The gameplay will definitely feel a bit dated but it's a pretty short game and should be really quick to get through

Playing through all of them again (minus Code Veronica) was an amazing experience. As Carson said, even the older ones are still very good games.

Technically I still need to play RE4 Remake once I finish the RE8 DLC, but I have been waiting for the RE4 Remake Gold edition to hit $20.

And if you enjoy the early RE games, definitely check out a game called Tormented Souls.

RE0 (prequel to RE1)
Revelations
Revelations 2

Are three games you should definitely play in the series.

Code Veronica is supposedly very good, but I can't handle all the polygons Plus, there's a rumor that Code Veronica is getting a remake, so I'm just going to wait for that.

ETA: Make sure you get the DLCs too. For example, while some people don't like RE5, it has one of the best DLCs in the series (Lost in Nightmares).

I know it seems like a lot, but the games are actually quite short. I think RE6 is the longest and it's only like 20 hours.

They're frequently on sale for very little money, so I'd say give a few a try and see how you like them. The early ones are more survival horror whereas the later ones are more action-oriented. So the franchise offers something for everyone. Plus, there are a million guides online if you get stuck on puzzles or bosses, so it's super easy to plow through any roadblocks if you get frustrated.

Im gonna give RE1 a go and take it from there. If i have trouble with the play style of that one I may just watch a story video of it on Youtube (Im sure they have one) and move on to RE 2 remaster.

Just stick to the mainline entries for now and work your way chronologically. Make sure you skip 6, it's one of the worst games I've ever played. Once you finish the main series, you can backfill with the other ones if you're itching for more. It would be redundant, but the original PS1 RE1/2/3 are all probably worth playing (RE3 PS1 is better than the remake btw. RE3 remake is considerably worse than the other remakes)

0 and Revelations 1 are terrible

Revelations 2 is pretty bad

Code Veronica is tedious and obnoxious but has a few redeeming qualities, would wait to see if there's a remake coming first
