I like both names, but Rotgut the Fat just has a ring to it. You're not sure whether he's going to kill you with a cleaver, or with rotten meat.

It doesn’t hurt. Pretty cool! I really don’t plan on needing to do full character sheets but if you have them, I’m fine to use them.
Hunt, you might not have any of these items at the start of the game :)
Hex brewer sounds cool. Think about how you can work that into an official position on the ship. Maybe you are the aid to the ship’s surgeon as your main job and selling brews on the side. And always secretly trying out new brews on your patients!

Yeah this is kind of how I was leaning. Either quartermaster or involved in healing the crew in some way.
Or even cook, but not sure how interesting that would be to roleplay.

This is an experiment. We will talk it out and work it out. I’m not overly concerned with minutia. You need to be concerned about the ghost monkey on the ship that keeps peeing on you

Can someone more experienced in this give me some advice, should I make a character that is somewhat the total opposite of his? I am thinking of making a female who I imagine would be the only one I think that could be a cool dynamic. He is writing his now and its basics are hes a former soldier who left the service of his lord after his wife and kids were killed by that lord and now he searches the seas for any means he can find possible to get his revenge.
Im not sure how to play off that or should I just make one more group focused?

Be who you want to be. Your focused on your character’s story. What is your ideal wacky pirate you want to spend time with (who you won’t care too much if they get eaten by a kraken). You obviously have to give your character motivation for why your character wants to be a part of the group and doesn’t nope out of the first sign of danger
We obviously welcome female players and characters. I would really bring it up too much unless you want that to be a focus for your character. I.E. maybe you’re a woman trying to hide your identity or something like that

There's not going to be a right or wrong answer here. It could be something like you two together plotted a mutiny your former boat and the captain found out and made you walk the plank. This boat is where you two ended up when found by our current captain.
You could be rival captains that fell on hard times and now have to swallow your pride to join a ship at the lowest of ranks.
One of you could be an expert in flintlock pistols and the other with a blade, so you teamed up to cover each other's weakness.
It could be anything. You have the advantage of weaving a backstory off of each other if you want to. Certainly do not have to though and you each could have your own cool back stories. I think what is most important is finding a little back story that excites you so that you're invested in whatever story Athens decides to tell.
