It would be foolish to think this wasn’t and hasn’t been planed out almost certainly in collision between Xbox/Sony/and Take 2 at minimum but likely many more involved for an extremely long time.
It was executed extremely specifically with Sony, who with all their failures still has more public support and can leverage their much more prominent position currently than Xbox, allowing them to take the brunt of the anger instead of a competitor with much less presence in the market leaving a lesser impact then announcing this immediately after GTA confirms they are forgoing physical.
This play has been the golden gooose of the entire video game industry for at least 15 years and they have decided now is the time to run it.
I’m not confident they will get the win they seek
This also is a very negative side effect of all of these companies being public traded. They have to have growth and there is a cap on the potential number of gamers in the world you can capture.
So their only other choice is to improve margins. But again, I think they will fail. For those who stay and accept it they will be making much more money per user than ever before but everyone will just migrate to pc when they realize a console is now just a super shitty gaming pc
Push squared for instance held a survey of over 6500 gamers who responded and 45% answered they are now heavily considering moving from Playstation to PC and 17% answered somewhat considering.
Only 23% answered with a commitment to stick with playstation unconditionally
The remaining 15% answered they have already left sony or are in progress of leaving
These numbers are absoolutely brutal for them

The numbers are PC Master race chuds. Sony's core audience likely hasn't even seen the news, and likely won't care.
Nintendo and Xbox will 100% do the same, heck Nintendo is 80% there already.

Pretty sure xbox already tried to do the same like a decade ago. Its coming for them as well, especially if they can knock $100 off console prices

I have a gaming pc but I barely ever use it.
My wife usually likes to watch when I play games so I use the ps5 pro in the living room.
It would likely be wise for me to get it up to snuff for the top line games at the moment I don’t think it has the specs to run the best of the best it’s pretty mid.
If I wait ram might go up another 10x because Microsoft is chasing a phantom with no demand for commercial use and in their arrogance has basically fricked over the entire consumer electronics market

You can set your TV up to work as a computer monitor.

Yeah I am thinking about buying an Imac for the living room and setting it up through that so I can keep my desktop in my office for work still.
The Imac is the one that doesnt require a seperate Pc its all built right into the monitor right?

This I do not know the answer to. It's been a long time since I was a PC gamer. Going to have to bulk up on my knowledge of PCs if XBOX follows Sony down this discless path.

Amazon
Yeah it’s a pretty neat thing. It’s an all in one desktop computer built entirely inside the monitor display itself so it needs no outside PC build
That model goes for 2000$ and has 24 GB of RAM memory with a SSD of 512 GB and is a 24 inch display with 10 Core GPUs and CPUs
You can get more expensive ones that can get RAM up to high as like 36 I think and 2 TB of SSD storage

Right on. Why are you looking at Macs instead of PCs? Personal preference? My wife uses a Mac as a graphic designer but I've not seen people seek those out other than specific profession-related uses.
Posted on 7/15/26 at 9:58 am to imjustafatkid
I’m not sure if you can do this on windows systems or not I’ve never looked into it but I get Macs and then usually partition off the operating system to where it splits its resources and I can switch between apples operating system and then the other partition will be running windows; or more preferably Linux
My wife is a graphic designer so Apple products really help her do her job much better than windows
Crazy our wife’s do the same job lol
My lady does weddings and other girly functions. She graduated from SCAD

Mine does some side hustle things like this but designs insurance/benefit guides full time.

Makes sense. I've done this on a Mac. Also not sure if possible on a PC.

With windows 11 being absolutely dreadful I’m going to go with Linux this time I think on the other partition.
I’m not very well versed in it so I’m going to have to find someone who is to help me or just wing it but I’m sure how wise that is if I’m buying what it’ll end up being after all is said and done including add ons close to a 3000 IMac lol

Yeah I'll probably go cheaper than that.

This seems relevant to the discussion about going "all digital."
ETA: I'm betting the hackers deleted stuff from his account and MS couldn't recover it, which sucks for this guy but is also a cautionary tale about why you shouldn't want all your stuff stored only digitally.

The report says some developers are frustrated because those paid posts are flooded with negative comments and community notes from players mad with PlayStation’s recent decisions
It also says this could become a bigger problem for future marketing campaigns, with GTA 6 mentioned as one example if the backlash continues.
Good job guys if this is true, complaining works

The scuttlebut that I have been hearing which sounds a lot more believable and practical than Xbox having a disc drive and supporting physical media, which I don’t think they will and imo they will join Sony in taking the off ramp, is that they will at least work to come up with some sort of system that allows any xbox user with physical games to convert those into digital copies for free.
Who knows what’s going to happen and who is going to do what right now though.

They already announced that. That's definitely something they're going to be doing. When they announced it, people were trying to say that's the same thing as removing the disc drive like Sony is doing.

So if i borrow someones disc for a day I can get a free copy of the game? Thats gonna be pretty hard to implement

I don't know how it's going to work, but that's what they've announced. Pretty consumer friendly.
Nintendo consoles already do a virtual game card thing like this so you can play switch games you own on your Switch and Switch 2 at the same time. I'm betting it functions similarly.
