so I went with crucial mx100 256GB SSD instead

That would've been my alternate suggestion until Samsung gets their shite fixed.

I would downclock that RAM to 2133 and get tighter timings. Shoot for 9-9-9-24 but 9-10-9-27 wouldnt be a diaster.

Yeah, that was the intention behind recommending he get the 2133 CL9 kit or the 2400 CL10. Same price and probably interchangeable in terms of clock/timing capabilities. The 2400 with CL10 will have roughly 8.3ns latency, and the 2133 CL9 at 8.4ns, so it's marginal at best. Though the lower frequency will put less stress on the IMC.

In my experience with 8320/50 chips they run best with an OC on the NB and tighter timings over higher frequencies.

Like said the memory controller on this old arcutechture is no doubt a little weak. So shoot for tighter timings with a 4.3-4.5 OC at the core. That will help out single core IPC, which you need for gaming.

970 will be fine. Just has its limitations, but the $40 savings for a budget build made it necessary. The board has vrm heatsinks, which is extremely important for running/overclocking the 8320/50 at all. You'll get a moderate overclock with a Hyper 212 on that board. Most 970 boards are not really meant for a lot of overclocking anyway, just whatever you can get on stock/low-ish voltage.

What's your go-to AIB on the NVIDIA side? assuming just a reference board that's going to get a block. I looked at a warranty chart posted over 2 years ago, and it appears EVGA had the best policies (allows cooler replacement, does cross-shipping, long warranty, etc). Of course, MSI is pretty similar. I assume they're all going to use Samsung ram?

something I just totally didn't think about was a network card

I'm assuming most people here just use a hard wired ethernet connection?

I'm going to have to get creative with where I set up my build

I had to do the same. I moved my tv to the other side of the room after my PSU debacle. I had to run coaxial cable all over the place so I could keep my modem by my PC. I figured out how to strip and put a new F-connector on though. Yay learning!

my "problem" is that when I think of having like a battlestation type setup, I think of having this sweet desk, double monitors, etc in a basement or a bedroom where it's relatively secluded

I don't want my setup to be in either of my bedrooms so that leaves my den or my living room. I keep trying to imagine where it will go and I think it's going to be in my den where my tv/ps3/router is. But I really only have one wall available and it's got windows, which I guess isn't terrible

From what I can gather my PSU was stressed to the max because of my new video card. It got super fricking hot melting the insulation, that caused the wires to touch resulting in sparks. It being on carpet fueled the fire. My PSU isn't strong enough for my current rig. I need one higher than 750 watts.

well now I'm suddenly paranoid/worried that my PSU isn't going to be enough

I have two video cards. I was fine up until then. There could be other factors but since I noticed the cord was hot and nothing else, I'm going with my original theory.

I have an 8320 overclocked to 4.5 with a 270X GPU and an Evo 212 cooler and a 450w Corsair PSU... Stable and stays very cool.

Asus M5A99X Evo r2.0 mobo, it's a little higher at $140 but I didn't want to skimp on the mobo, especially knowing I was going to OC.

You say aren't going to OC or anything, but it's a lot of fun tinkering and I think you'll end up wanting to sooner rather than later.
