And the Logitech Performance MX, $30 off at Staples:
Glad you got it for a discount. I have that mouse and it sits in a drawer unused. It's fricking horrible for gaming IMO, and the battery charge lasts about 2 days (I hate rechargeable wireless mice for that reason. At least the G-series rechargeables have an option to go wired).

For the games I play, I'm just planning on using an Xbox controller or the Razer Sabertooth (if I can get a deal on it).
But as far as the mouse goes, I got it because it got such great reviews. That's weird that you hate it.
What keyboard should I look for? Since I will be using the Xbox controller for gaming, I don't care about an advanced gaming keyboard, so I'm trying to decide between the MS Natural Ergo or the Logitech K800.

I mostly hated it for its shape and battery life. The first one is purely subjective.
I use it when I travel with my laptop for work, but that hasn't happened in over a year.
Keyboards, I don't know. Given my profession (some sort of writer/editor capacity in the last 10 years), I probably type more than most and tend to get used to one keyboard and stick with it for years. Aside from spare/throwaway keyboards, I've owned maybe 2 in the last five years - first was a logitech wireless wave, which I started using at the office once I replaced with my current home keyboard, the Logitech G510. I'm a logitech fanboy, not for any particular reason other than that I only buy keyboards I can try first, and Logitech and Microsoft are generally the two brands you'll find on display at your local best buy/office depot etc.
(Although I did notice recently that Best Buy has revamped their layout at some point, and now have a pc gamer section with a few razer products on display).
I'd just say buy one that feels comfortable to you. If you aren't gaming with it (and likely don't play competitive FPS), none of the gamer-marketed keyboards are really going to benefit you, unless you like macros (I actually use my G510 macro keys for work-related stuff). I've never been a fan of the split-key ergo designs, though I'm sure I'd get used to it if I were willing to type on one for more than the 5 minutes I spend with it in the store.

I pulled the following information regarding my fans off my BIOS:
CPU Temp - 50 degrees Celsius
MOBO Temp - 35 degrees celsius
CPU Fan 1 Speed - 5690-5790 RPM
CPU Fan 2 Speed - N/A
Chassis Fan 1 and 2 - N/A
Chassis Fan 3 - 1078-1090 RPM
CPU Fan 1 and 2 setting - Full on
Chassis Fan 1,2, and 3 - Full on
Dehumidifer function - disabled
---------
I looked under the fan settings and saw that it was interchangeable between Full on and Automatic. Would it be safe to put it on Automatic so that whenever the CPU gets too hot the fans would kick on, otherwise they would be quiet? Or would that put my PC at risk of overheating?

definitely put the chassis fans on auto. The CPU fan can go on auto as well, but I would take a look at the default fan curve in the bios and at least make sure it ramps up nearly to max when the CPU hits 75C. I have a pretty good feeling that your noise issue will be solved when you turn those case fans down.

I didn't see anything in that particular area regarding the fan curve, so I will have to do some more browsing to see if I can locate it tomorrow morning. Thanks for the help

Running into what I think could be hardware failure now
Woke up this morning (no changes made last night in the BIOS or anything) to my power light flashing on/off. Did some research online, tried the hold the power down for 15-20 seconds, neither of those worked. Flipped the power switch on my power supply and it kicked my PC on. Once my PC turned on and it recognized that my PC was improperly shutdown I pressed enter and received the following message:
Your PC can't come out of hibernation
status: 0xc0000411
A fatal error occurred processing the restoration data
File: \hiberfile.sys
-------------------------
ETA: Just adjusted my power settings to never sleep and will be going upstairs to clean for about 20-30 minutes so I will see if it auto shuts down again.

Check microcenter for that CPU an mobo. I got that exact combo for $230. Save you $40 or so
Posted on 3/16/14 at 10:50 am to SaintLSUnAtl
I switched to the 8320, so now the combo costs $220 from Amazon
Posted on 3/16/14 at 11:14 am to ILoveLamp
Damn. Microcenter had the 8320 for $100 a few weeks ago. Still might. That mobo is around $80-90 so it still would have saved you a few $ at MC
I almost got the 8320 too till I saw the combo they had for the 8350. Truthfully I don't know that I'd ever notice a difference tbh

Haven't bought those units yet, they're just listed on my build, so I'll definitely check it out. I don't live anywhere near a Microcenter though, and I know sometimes they are very particular about in store pickup, or maybe that's just regarding the discounts/rebates.
Just checked the 8320 on Microcenter. It's $129.99 but it's an in store pickup only. I live in FL where there are none

That has happened before, and usually worst case scenario is a failing hard drive, but it could just be a corrupt hiberfile.sys. You could try deleting that file and re-enabling hibernation. Or just turn off all sleep/hibernation and other power savings. My computer runs 24/7/365, and I've told windows to never shut off or sleep, ever, nor should it turn off my monitor or hard drives.

I think Staples will now price match Microcenter

Reddit confirms. Unfortunately I couldn't find the 8320 on the Staples website.

Sup guys. Haven't built a PC in years, so trying to get up to speed on things.
Is the Asus VG248QE too much monitor for a $1000-1200ish gaming build?

What GPU? If it's a PoS GPU then a 144Hz monitor might not matter.
Posted on 3/16/14 at 8:11 pm to stout
Well that's the question really. Can I afford a GPU that is good enough for that monitor in a $1k-ish balanced gaming build?
Posted on 3/16/14 at 8:29 pm to Raz
Does the $1k budget include the monitor?
I mean, either way, if you're only spending $800 on the actual tower, you should still be spending 30% of that on the video card, you'll be able to get 120+ fps on a lot of games. Depending on the game, it might end up being a compromise between frame rate and graphic quality. The higher frame rates beyond 60 will be most useful in competitive FPS, where graphic quality isnt as important anyway.
