Redoing my WC'd Node 304 from tubing to acrylic tubing and adding the 290 once blocks arrive.

Progress so far.

I like that res. I replied to you on the last page on the bottom. Here it is.

quote:

yeah, that's what I have been conflicted with, but the 290 will only yield around 830-880k/h, whereas the 3 7870 I'm looking at around 1400+. I spent less for more(I was looking at the gigabyte windforce card). That's how it makes sense. That is what really made the decision for me. The thought of gaming never crossed my mind, and still hasn't.

The cards have $15 rebates, which equates to $480, but another $13 for the powered PCIe riser, so $493. Given his current mining setup and existing hardware, the riser is the only additional purchase he has to make vs. 290.

Here, I'll do the math for you:
Working under the assumption that with my help, the 7870s will be able to achieve at minimum a conservative 400 kh/s each at the optimal thread concurrency, intensity, and core/mem ratio.

The R9-290 can achieve, optimistically, 880-900 kh/s. For that hash rate, we can estimate an optimistic 330w power consumption. The three 7870s, how about we just double it.

At a rate of $0.08/kwh, the three 7870s will net 30% more profit per day.

Yup, and those high 290 hashrates depend on if you get one that can be flashed to a 290x.

Ah, didn't notice that.

Yeah I wasn't sure the 7870s performed that well but I still believe the estimates to be off on the 290s wattage. You can downvolt the thing to 1500 on memory with stock core clocks and still achieve 850 hash rates. I need to buy me a wall meter to see what its pulling from my wall to calculate accurate wattage from the 290.

Again I don't know your set up or that you even had extra boards, I was going off a PURELY new set up cost swag estimate.

I might purchase a 290X before returning or selling this 290. Would like to see the delta in performance and cost/performance per core.

Yes I can look up the numbers but rather see it for myself.

EDT:
I have another question.

Where are you guys putting these cards? In the attic, a shed or garage? The sound of just 1 air cooled card under load is enough to drive me away from mining.

That is really the sole reason I haven't done it. It isn't worth enough for my discomfort.

Did not know the cards came with a $15 rebate not did I know he had a board set up already. I'm still on a different POV than you. Was talking on a purely new set up.

They're just in the corner where my current set-up is. I don't even notice them running anymore until I turn them off. Then it's too quiet.

Jesus. I know Mark Rejhon. He was a big part of the beginning of HTPC on the AVS forums many years ago. Dude is a freaking genius. He literally is one of the founding fathers of HTPC.

I was involved in those forums back then and ran my home theaters video processing on a system based off of the work he did.

Ah you have become acclimated to the conditions.

What is your set up like now? Main PC still the Sabertooth/2x7950s and now what are the mining rigs?

And I barely understand what that involves. I am math-impaired. I went as far as Calc 2 in college and barely got through that. And given how little I use math, basic algebra/geometry is about all I remember.

I think the disconnect here is how you perceive a pure mining rig as a whole -- Zero gaming, benching, encoding, or any other task that doesn't start with m and end with ining. If you are building a purely new mining setup, meaning you don't have any components yet, the component costs will be very close. They are run with the cheapest mobo/CPU combos, with a single 4GB stick of ram, in a plastic file crate or on a wooden box instead of a case. The cost differences will be the higher capacity PSU and the 1 or 2 powered risers so that you can use x1 slots to run the other cards (no, there is no performance loss in mining when using x1 slots when using the proper risers).

The PSU required for the 3 7870s would add about $50 to the cost (assuming you're getting a PSU that would only allow one 290), and let's say 2 risers instead of just 1, bringing the total additional cost to around $75. At average profit per day (it's been a little higher than that for several days), the 30% additional daily profit from the 7870s would recoup that $75 in 2-3 weeks.

That's pretty much it. I have a sempron 140 running on an old am3 asus mobo that has 2 16x and 2 1x slots. That has a 5750 that's mining 24/7 and a nvidia 260. That pc is doubling as a mining/htpc/seed box. I got the mobo for like $20 and the cpu was $15 on ebay. I literally built that computer for nothing. It's what's getting converted to a mining only set up. I'll have my xfx 550w doubled with a corsair cx430 to run all the 7870s.

Would $700 be a decent price for two 280x cards?

Well, if you consider that you're still paying $50 over retail for each card, then no. But considering that $400 has been the norm price lately, $350 each is decent.

He might have. It was someone on the AVS Forums that came up with the term for sure. We're talking late 1990's early 2000's AVS Forums.

The focus of my company used to be home theaters and home automation. Since 2008 we've reinvented ourselves and 90%+ of our work is commercial work focused on data center cabling and environment building. I still do residential work but I don't take on the big projects ($150,000 plus) anymore as they just take too many resources for me to focus on them.

My residential work is now limited to word of mouth and referrals. I have projects upcoming in Powell, Ohio and Myrtle Beach, SC that I'll fly in and oversee but I will hire local labor for the grunt work. They aren't huge projects though.

Back to AVS. I was very active in those forums and the discussions when the HTPC movement started but the knowledge and work guys like Mark put into it was monumental. For me it was just a way to avoid paying $10k for a Faroudja video processor for my projector. Those were the days of analog CRT projectors and you had to have a video processor in front of the projector to maximize image quality. To this day nothing matches the inky blacks or image smoothness of a great CRT projector with 9" lenses. Full 1080P and not a pixel to be found.

TLDR, I know.
