Ah, I have given up on surround set ups.

A nice sound bar and wireless sub is good enough for me.

Yeah I know. We got the contractor to wire up a few rooms in this house during construction. You don't even notice the tiny caps in the corners which have stub ends for the surround. I did it "just in case" but decided to go the sound bar route.

Now if my home was larger and we had a dedicated movie/theater room, then yes I would do surround without question. Maybe on next house, I could dedicate some attic space to one.

Yep, but at the moment he had a certain amount of money to spend, where he would've only been able to afford 1 290 vs. the 3 7870s at that price. The hash rate of the 7870s will yield more dollars per day than one 290 even after factoring in power costs. The larger the investment you make at this point, the longer you have to assume the mining bubble will last.

With the 7870s (which were not purchased at a gouge price) and his already existing hardware, he can potentially mine his investment back within a month, or he can continue to make incremental "bets" at the sustainability of the mining bubble -- for example, he can mine $100 or so worth of coins in a few days and then sell two of those 7870s (maybe even make a profit from the sale), and use the proceeds and the mining money to invest in a 290, increasing his hash rate, slightly lowering his power consumption, and at a lower risk.

That's just what I'd do. I don't like paying $100 more for a card that may or may not earn my investment back despite its efficiency. 2 months ago, sure, but hindsight is 20/20.

yeah, that's what I have been conflicted with, but the 290 will only yield around 830-880k/h, whereas the 3 7870 I'm looking at around 1400+. I spent less for more(I was looking at the gigabyte windforce card). That's how it makes sense. That is what really made the decision for me. The thought of gaming never crossed my mind, and still hasn't.
