How would I go about installing this with only one USB 3.0 header???
You'll have to decide between your case's USB 3.0 and that card reader's. Oorr...
You could get this: LINK It's a PCI-E card with on-board USB 3.0 headers.
But honestly, not worth the extra cost unless you are just up to your neck in USB 3.0 drives and must connect them all at once.
I used to have a bay card reader, but I ran out of room for it when I mounted my reservoir/pump combo and connected it to a top fill port, so I ended up getting this: LINK But no, I did not pay $78 for it. I paid $13, but now that one is discontinued, hence the stupid price.
So now I'd recommend this one. It connects via USB 3.0 LINK

I just want to see if they actually send me one for that price.
I'm wondering the same thing myself. I ordered 4 of them this morning and if they send me different boards, I'm just going to send them all back to Amazon.

Anyone know why I might be getting black bars around certain games? Tomb Raider and the Payday 2 beta both have black bars around the edges. The resolution is set at 1920x1080 so that's not the problem.

They just canceled my order FYI.

scaled image?
What do you guys think of this build for my friend with a $1500 budget?

looks nice.
I might go with an 4570k and a z87 board and up the graphics cards but maybe not.

Check your gpu's control panel and see what the scaling is.

What's the goal of this PC?
Posted on 8/8/13 at 6:36 pm to finchmeister08
well well well, looks at this. Reminds me of the guy that works at the Staples Tech Desk.

High-end gaming. Wants to be able to handle any graphics-intensive games on high settings.

Well then he fricked it up. Stand by while I fix.

What resolution? Just 1080p or higher?
Posted on 8/8/13 at 6:49 pm to brucevilanch
I'm sure 1080p would be fine. If 1440p can fit then I'm sure he'd like it but he probably doesn't know that exists.

Okay,
I'm not going to provide my usual wall of text because odds are, this guy is going to show my configuration to whoever made the first one, and he's going to get butthurt and say I don't know what I'm talking about, and he'll end up going with the shittier configuration.
Although, I think it's hilarious that whoever configured it chose the weakest CPU on a platform that's about to get its next big refresh in just a month or two, and then he chose only two sticks of RAM for a quad channel motherboard, negating basically the only advantage that platform would offer paired with that CPU, but still paying the premium for that platform.
This system beats the other one all around. LINK
He can get a liquid cooler if he wants, but if he's new to this, overclocking should be low priority. This system will rape right out of the box.
But we can do better than that. So here's an alternative, that would absolutely rape his original configuration in gaming performance because we were able to put even more money into the GPU using the following logic:
1. The CPU is less important and will have the same gaming performance since games don't use hyperthreading.
2. The difference between 1600Mhz RAM and 2133Mhz RAM is essentially none in gaming performance.
3. 8GB of RAM is more than enough for gaming, and he can always upgrade later, quite easily.
4. The Samsung 840 pro is fast, but the regular Samsung 840 is also very fast, and I strongly doubt he'd notice the difference.
5. Now there's room in the budget for orgasmic 1440p gaming
Here it is: LINK
If he doesn't think I know what I'm talking about, he deserves the original system.

Which build would you suggest of those two?
Posted on 8/8/13 at 8:05 pm to tehchampion140
For a primarily gaming PC, the second one. If he's big into video editing and other multi-threaded applications, then the first one.
But the second one is 1440p awesomeness (he could also bump up his budget in the first build to get the 1440p monitor instead of the ASUS monitor).
