Right? At least they'll look great
I got caught up in the moment bc I hate having a horizontal monitor and a vertical. With the Dell sale ($810 for the AW3225QF + 20% cashback from capital one offer link + $50 back for using Amex) I was like "ok great, now I can just get a second monitor and it'll be a perfect match
...No. It's too big

I've got a (probably) stupid question. If I have a 144hz monitor but I set the refresh rate to 72hz will it look bad?

Probably not. You’ll notice that’s exactly half of the full refresh rate. Should refresh clean, just at half the rate.
But link to the monitor? Is it freesync/gsync compatible?

Well I was looking at a 4k 60 monitor, everyone keeps telling me to go for 144 but I know my 4070 Super ain't cut out for that.

Do not, under any circumstances, buy a monitor that doesn’t have variable refresh rate capabilities (the aforementioned freesync/gsync). It’s extremely important.
But if you have variable refresh, you just don’t have to worry about it. You won’t have any screen tearing regardless. I have a 144hz monitor and game at whatever, depending on the game.

Yeah every monitor I'm looking at has Freesync, even the cheapies at Microcenter.

Then don’t worry about having too high of a max framerate. Doesn’t matter. Will refresh clean, regardless.

Just make sure to come back once you have it so we can make sure you have sync turned on. It’s usually not on my default. You don’t want to know how many people pay a ton for 144hz adaptive refresh monitors to then not realize they are running it at 60hz locked

I'm on a cheapo 1080p monitor (some brand called AOpen) right now and it was actually set to 120hz by default instead of 60.

Also make sure to keep an eye on Windows. That bitch will sometimes switch you to 60hz after updates

I think I've settled on this monitor for now. Only $200.

DIY Gaming PCs are a tough Xmas present, we opened on Saturday morning and I am still working on this thing.

It is one of those things where each time you build a PC, the next one becomes way easier and faster to complete.

Not much you can do when the mobo has a dead PCIe slot

Move it down to the next slot while you wait for an RMA

Yup that’s what I did, installing updates now. Can’t wait for him to fire up some of his games now

Tech Jesus shockingly gave a good review to a prebuild a few days ago (Thermaltake $1700 with a 7800X3D and 4070 Super).
