I bought an AM5 board for exactly this reason. But now they have X870E's...so I have a conundrum.

I have an X670E so no need to upgrade mobo for me. Aint hurting for USB4.0 that bad

Yeah, but.....

This was part of why I put off upgrading platforms. Historically, the biggest jump in board capability tends to be between the first and second generation. After that, boards get really iterative or start including features that no one really needs yet, like next gen PCIe when we haven’t saturated the previous gen yet.
But yeah, first gen buyers tend to get itchy as the platform matures

Apple reportedly considering buying Intel as chipmaker continues to struggle
Samsung also mentioned. Would be wild to see Intel bought out, AMD may have literally ended that company with Ryzen (and their own lack of advancement for many years ofc).

Apple and Samsung aren't the only major tech companies that have reportedly considered buying Intel. In September, it was reported that Qualcomm had reached out to Intel about a potential takeover.

Looks like it's been officially confirmed that the 9800X3D is launching at $479 (blah) with a reported 8% gain over the 7800X3D (a bit meh, but fine) and 20% over the CU 9 285k (which, if true, is likely what is driving the price hike).
I don't love that AMD is starting to flex their position in their pricing, but it was inevitable. Assuming the independent reviews hold up, sounds like a solid chip, though you're certainly no longer getting an "AMD discount". I don't think it's an immediate buy for me, as my 5800x is still chugging along just fine, but that could change if I end up pulling the trigger on a GPU in a few months.

AMDs Ryzen 5000 series is their cpu version of a 1080ti.
Those chips could very well last and perform well for another 5-6 years.

I don’t have time this morning to dig into them, but reviews for the 9800x3D are very positive. Not as big of a cost per frame jump as you would like to see, due to the increase in price, but nonetheless better than the 7800x3D, unless you catch the latter deeply on sale. I’ll see about adding some of those breakpoints later. But regardless, it crushes Intel’s current options.
If you’re budget conscious, it’s obviously a more nuanced conversation, but if you’re not, and you’re looking to build the baddest gaming rig on the block, this is it (as always, at least for now

PC Jesus had some good things to say but was unable to explain why there was a huge performance jump for some games and not for others. It ranged from 8% to 27%, depending on the game, above the 7800x3d.

Newegg has this thing for almost $600. Just get the 9800x3d and don't look back.

Random guess, but maybe games that are more or less single core clock sensitive? I imagine games that utilize multiple cores better might see less improvement from a clock or IPC bump.

I'm lucky to live close to a Microcenter. 9800X3D is only $30 more ($450 vs $480).
There were 9800X3Ds selling on Ebay earlier for $750.
Speaking of which, the 7600X3D is looking really good right now at $300.

Seems like decent value for Zen 4.

He explained what they tested and that they tested it over and over, on multiple games. I won't pretend to understand what he said or meant.

Haha fair enough. I’ll watch soon and see if I can make heads or tails of it.

I haven't finished the video yet, but based on the BG3 result, it sounds like it's related to core usage, but kind of in the opposite manner in which I was thinking. The newer chip has a significantly higher power budget, which not only lets it boost higher in single core, but allows it to boost much higher (relatively speaking) in all core workloads. BG3 (and some other games) appear to be capable of heavily taxing multiple cores simultaneously, which allows the newer chip to shine because the older chip has to reduce clocks all core to maintain stability.

And as a price point follow up, it looks like you should only seriously consider going with the 7800x3D over the 9800x3D if the former drops below $400 (and the latter remains at MSRP). Anything above that and you're better off with the new chip on a price to performance analysis.

Is this how PC parts will be forever now? Something cool comes out, scalpers snatch them up and put them on ebay for 150% of cost? Can't get the 9800x3d for anything near msrp. Is this what AMD wants? (I'm not getting one, but if I were, I'd be frustrated). Not sure what can be done about it, it just seems like if AMD put more out there, then the scalpers wouldn't have the demand to do this.
Posted on 11/12/24 at 5:12 pm to SaintEB
Nah, scalpers are going to buy up everything, regardless. They did the same thing with the PS5 Pro, leaving scalpers with huge inventory.
There’s no rush to buy a 9800x3D right now. Hell, motherboard selection sucks arse. Wait a month or so and buy. I will be shocked as shite to see this turn into a 30 series GPU scalping situation.

Good point. There are pros available at my local Best Buy right now.
ETA: I don't think I'll do a MB. I'm on AM5 right now.
