I gotta vent now...

I work in Electronics and seeing stuff like MY FCLK WONT REACH 1900 ON MY DDR4-3200 RAM...

Its like you do realize, DDR4-3600 is already overclocked right? DDR4 native frequency is 2133/2400/2666... If you buy a fricking kit that is rated DDR4-3600, its rated to work at the timings advertised by the vendor and nothing more.

You're trying to overclock something more than its already been overclocked, and the vendor doesn't guarantee functionality under those conditions.

And then they go blame the motherboard manufacturer like Asrock, Gigabyte, Asus, etc... Its like god damn, are you people fricking stupid? shite is infuriating

Is there a point in overclocking RAM? I have a 3800X and 16GB of at least 3000 speed RAM (can’t remember the exact speed) and the website I found to identify desktop bottlenecks showed even with a 3090, my gpu would be the bottleneck (assuming no overclocking). Currently using a 1070 until I can find one of the new cards, so that’s obviously my bottleneck now.

Sure, to a point.

THe fastest RAM kits (overclocked from the factory) are probably the 3200 CL14 (in terms of price/performance), and the new 4000 CL16 kits (raw performance regardless of price).

I'd say the sweet spot for price/performance is 3600 CL16 which isn't much different from 3200 CL14 (maybe 2-3 FPS).

If you're just gaming, honestly DDR4-3000 is fine.

The laptop market is a damn warzone.

quote:

today AMD's Ryzen 9 5900H surfaced, packing 8 Zen 3 cores, 16 threads, and a boost clock of 4.64 GHz.

This makes the 5900H a solid 25 percent more powerful in single-threaded applications and about 20 percent more powerful in multi-threaded tasks. This is in-line with the 19% increase in IPC Zen 3 has over Zen 2 at the same TDP, and we would put the higher single-threaded figure down to improvements in the boost algorithm: 4.64 GHz single-core boost is nothing to scoff at even in desktop solutions -- and this is a mobile part.

My vitriol isn't directed towards anyone on here

Theres a giant Gigabyte BETA bios thread on Tweaktown that people are bitching in about Memory (that is already overclocked) not running at faster frequencies and timings on bios' posted by Gigabyte that are BETA BIOS

So Bitcoin is through the roof now and mining on older cards can make a little bit of coin now. Might set my 1070 and 1080 to run 24/7 and my 2080 to run when I'm not gaming.

If you can get a 3080 at MSRP and as long as bitcoin stays high, you could pay it off in 6-7 months mining it 24/7

If you’re buying a new card for Bitcoin mining, you’re buying a 3060ti not a 3080 fwiw

Well you wouldn't be mining BTC in the first place, but that statement is also not entirely true. Sure the 3060ti has a great price/performance, but it has an extremely similar ROI to the the 3080. Both of them are just shy of 5 months, so if their ROIs are similar, you go with the higher performing card

I think it’s the superior performance per watt that makes the difference

Dude can't even post his own parts list

Eta: is he on a strict budget? I would shy away from Asrock (I've had issues with a couple mobos) and find some lower cl ram.

Any B550 board will handle a Ryzen 5 3600 just fine.

The ASRock B550 boards are actually good quality. The issues were with their Z490 boards.

Only thing here is if he wants to upgrade to an 8 core, 12 core, or a 16 core part down the road. He may want something more beefier for a 5900x for example.

But that board will handle a 3600 without any issue.

He could probably get DDR4-3600 CL16 memory for a few dollars more, but you're talking maybe 2-4 FPS in games for that at most.

Next up is a 3070/3080 upgrade and a new main monitor to replace my Dell S2716DGR. I'll also have an extra 2x8gb kit of that vulcan ram and a random 2x4gb Ddr4 set for sale soon, as well as a gtx 1070
