I laughed a little at the Skylake to Kaby Lake part.

They are struggling. Their 10 nm chips are already behind and they are living on their history.

Their Skylake chips were absolutely great IMO. Of course Skylake is the first upgrade I've done since I built my Pentium 4 PC over 10 years ago

Kaby Lake is a huge disappointment to me, aside from the Pentium G4560 which probably will make the I3 irrelevant.

I recently built a Kaby Lake/Pascal machine.

Very disappointed with Kaby Lake. The 1050 TI I got with it is awesome though. Exceeded all expectations.

Apparently the Intel and AMD GPU deal is completed. Crazy.

LINK

quote:

AMD already owns the graphics in consoles, and the next place it could plant its flag could be the last anyone expected: Intel.

While rumors of a possible deal have circulated all year, something firmer arose Monday night when Kyle Bennett, longtime editor of enthusiast hardware site HardOCP.com, posted that the ink on the deal was already dry. “The licensing deal between AMD and Intel is signed and done for putting AMD GPU tech into Intel’s iGPU,” Bennett wrote on his site’s forum.

“To my understanding, Intel has a team of about ~1,000 engineers working on their forward-looking iGPU technology,” Bennett told PCWorld. “Basically, that work will be scrapped and that team and their work will be replaced with AMD teams and technology going forward. There are also Apple implications here as well, and this deal is good for Apple assuredly.”

Is an Nvidia desktop CPU launch on the horizon sometime in the future? Intel's actions make me think so.

Should be any day/week, if the Feb 28th launch leak is correct.

I'm all for the most performance, I don't care who makes it.

They getting into the proccessor game? Sliding into Intel's turf. They don't like it, so they ring up homie AMD, tell am they'll have to regulate, mount up.

You guys are kray kray.

Yes they have shtty mobile CPU and some specialized CPUs for enterprise and deep learning but nothing on consumer side planned. They have talked about it years ago, but that was during the early days of Tegra.

Anyone have good experiences with undervolting their GPU?

Ever since I've moved to my new apartment, my GPU temps have been increasingly hotter.

I have a R9 380 from Sapphire, and in my old apartment, it idled around 41-43 degrees Celcius, which for that card, is pretty normal.

However, now its idling around 48-49, and while gaming on games like Witcher 3, the temps can sky up to 89-90, which is about 10 degrees hotter than I've ever seen the card.

I've tried a few fan curves, cleaning my case, increasing the fan speed of my case fans, but nothing seems to help in my case.

Can the ambient temps cause a card to have that drastic of a temperature increase?

The card still seems to be running okay, as I haven't had any crashes, and I'm still pretty pleased with 1080p performance.

I'm considering trying undervolting, as I don't want the temps to be that high, even though for the Tonga GPUs, they are notorious for running hot.

Very much so, if my house is at 65 my cards run cooler than if my house is at 72, I have tested this while bench marking.

Lot of talk that Ryzen stock coolers will have RGB LED lighting. I personally don't care for RGB lighting.

Having something like a wraith would be nice tho.

Forbes: AMD Ryzen Biggest Leak Yet: Amazing Benchmarks And Prices Starting At Just $129

quote:

The performance numbers are yet another worrying sign for Intel as they indicate AMD’s Ryzen CPUs will indeed be a match in both performance and price. In fact, it’s looking like AMD will be able to undercut Intel in most areas and sometimes by significant margins. Worrying for Intel, yes, but this is great news for the consumer.

Even so, the supposed R7-1700X is more than a match for the Core i7-6850K in most tests, outstripping it in many of them and giving the Core i7-6900K a run for its money too. Even if the R7-1700X does perform close to the Core i7-6850K, it’s still a fantastic CPU for the money; the latter costs nearly twice as much at $609 on Newegg right now, while the AMD CPU is slated to retail for just $382, plus the latter sports two more cores and four more threads.

Keep in mind this is the 1700X, not the top end 1800X, on an entry level motherboard with what appears to be turbo boost off.

quote:

It’s worth noting that Turbo mode for Ryzen CPU is currently disabled (or undetected), so the performance could still theoretically increase. The Ryzen 7 model that was used for this test has a base clock of 3400 MHz. Judging from what we know so far, this means Ryzen 7 1700X, so it is not the fastest Ryzen model out there.

What’s also quite interesting is the fact that Ryzen 7 CPU was tested on .. MSI A320 motherboard, which looks like this. This is an entry-level AM4 motherboard, so we don’t know how did that affect performance, maybe that’s why Turbo mode was undetected in the first place. Finally the last important thing to note are memory timings (17-17-17-39 2T) @ 2400 MHz. This also could’ve negatively affected the performance, as those timings are not very good.

Bit the bullet on the Acer Predator 34" curved monitor for the build. It arrived today. I probably clean the desktop up and get it up and running on Saturday. I'll have a 28" 4K Acer to the left of it for other stuff.
