Ya know, I was a bit worried with a single Fury X at 4K, but I've actually been quite happy with the performance tbh.

Battlefield 4 I pull around 50FPS average at 4K ultra 2x MSAA using Mantle (Mantle about +3FPS average over DX11 here), and Doom I am pulling 55FPS avg with a minimum of about 44 using the new Vulkan API. OpenGL was around 45FPS average with dips down as low as 38. And Forza Apex 4K max runs a smooth 60FPS.

With Battlefield 1 being my main game this fall, featuring DX12, I suspect I'll be fine there as well.

Back to waiting until Vega for me, perfectly fine at 4K with a single Fury X until then.

Gaming I assume?

This is the one I would get for that price range.

As long as TN panels don't bother you.

Edit: The HDMI on that is only 1.4 and not 1.4b. Make sure to get a DP cable with it.

Anybody like using widespread displays?

LG 29

Had a good deal on one for prime day. Thinking about picking it up but don't know if games will look good.

They'll be awesome if the game supports it. However it will be frustrating when games don't due to black bars on the side. Can't say I'm in the 21:9 camp atm. =/

I just don't know if 4gb going forward is enough.

Ya, that was my thought as well. Even tho 4gb should be plenty for 1440P for a few more years, it's kinda strange buying 4gb vram in 2016.

HBM 4GB is enough for another year or two at 1440p. It's a good deal.

Amazon had the 4GB 480 on flash sale today, from $199 for $169. Stock lasted 14 minutes.

No not at all.

It's been too little since 2014.

Disagree, Fury X 4GB at 1440p/144Hz Freesync has been able to run everything max with zero issues in any way with VRAM for me for over a year. Still doing extremely well at 4K currently.

Bioshock Infinite
Borderlands PS
COD Blops 3
DOOM
Battlefield 4
DayZ
Batman AK
Gears of War UE
Forza Apex

I feel like you can easily get another year+ out of a 4GB card even at 1440p.

Decided to run the bench on Ashes of the Singularity. Want to see what the difference is when I get my 1080 if I ever find one.

I have one still in the wrapper collecting dust. It's a paperweight until I have more time.

You don't turn up to 11, you posted your settings.

For most ppl but 4GB has been the min max @ 1440 for a few years now.

Also no need to list refresh rates variable speed tech for describing resource cacheing. I see ppl do it a lo t like it has any meaning as point of reference.

Edt:

Bioshock Infinite
Borderlands PS
COD Blops 3
DOOM
Battlefield 4
DayZ
Batman AK

These aren't even resource heavy games like Tomb Raider, Metro, Crysis and Far Cry which I have between 5-6GBs.

The ones in bold are games I'm over 4.

I definitely turn up to 11.

But like I listed, of the last 20 or so triple A games, only 5 can even go past 4GB. Of those, only Nvidia Hairworks puts them beyond 4GB on AMD cards and that's after Nvidia intentionally gimps it on AMD cards.

Can easily get another year+ with 4GB at 1080 and 1440 IMO.

Hell I'm at 4K now and these games still aren't using up 4GB.

I'm assuming HBM is implied here, since it allows for the extra bandwidth to move data in and out quickly enough to compensate for capacity in some scenarios that may call for more than 4GB, but frame times will quickly start to suffer in consistency (which is not something everyone notices visually). In cases where massive textures are written to VRAM and remain there (particularly for any preloaded fixed area of a map in non-open world games), spillover will go to system memory and be the bottleneck, at which point vram bandwidth would mean very little.

It's amazing how instantaneous the paradigm shift was regarding vram, as well as CPU cores, parallel to the amount of usable ram and cores for PS4/Xbone. Video cards used to have more vram than they needed, where a 2GB 680 would match or beat a stock 3GB 7970 at Bioshock/Crysis/Battlefield/Arkham etc. at 1440P. As soon as we started to get AAA titles developed for next-gen only, CPU core count and vram suddenly mattered.

Correct. The driver will handle cacheing and keep it under whats avaible on card. But like you stated, you then bog down the GPU itself then because you're transferring and recalculating data that could have been cached. So when I had my HTC 690 with only 2GB of VRAM for 1440, I got mucb better performance increases with OCing the memory vs the chip. At a point you reach DR and it's not benefiting anything at all.

Yes we're talking HBM here, it was mostly from someone linking the R9 Fury on sale for $349 and asking if 4GB is enough.

Is there a list out there of upcoming games using DX12?

Battlefield 1
Civ 6 (confirmed today DX12)

quote:

It comes as no surprise, then, that this reputation is alive and well in Civilization VI. That’s right, my friends, we’re gettin’ the band back together to implement DirectX 12, explicit multi-GPU and asynchronous compute to Civilization VI when it launches on October 21. There will be a built-in benchmark, too. From the veteran HD 7970 to the brand new RX 480, we’re already working hard to bring an uncompromising experience to many years’ worth of Radeon™ graphics cards.

ETA: found one, didn't realize almost every major game is supporting DX12 this fall, nice.

Deus Ex
BF1
Forza Horizon 3
GoW 4
Civ VI
Watch Dogs 2
Ark
Halo Wars 2
Star Citizen
