I'd be surprised if it were the CPU, but there's a first time for everything. Are you going to RMA or do a buy-and-return test from Amazon?

True story - my first Intel "Pentium" processor (60mhz, ) had the floating point error that was common. Intel replaced them all with 66s that did not have the error. But, to me, the problem was seamless - I wouldn't have known the thing was bad if they hadn't told me.

Yeah - now I'm down to just the SSD, booting to a flash drive. At least the restarts go a lot faster now. No optical drive, even - Windows 10 screen comes up - and 5 to 8 seconds - BSOD, Machine Check Exception. I'm out of ideas. I got both from Newegg, as well as the Windows 10 installation. I wonder if they have any ideas as to how to eliminate one versus the other?

I hate do to it, but I'm RMAing the processor. I guess in about a week or so - we'll know.

Hopefully it's the only thing that needs to be RMAed. Maybe it's a Skylake-specific issue.

If the motherboard is bad - I'll be damned if I know what it is - it boots to Freedos - it flashed the bios update like a champ. I mean - if it were bad Sata ports - that wouldn't drive a flash drive install to MCE. Something strange going on, though, for sure. I guess both sticks of ram could be bad, but what are the odds of that?

(True story - when I built Mrs. Midnight's computer in 2012 - basically a tiny SSD, plus 2 1TB platters and I decided to just go with Windows 7 RAID mirrored - because she had an early physical failure and because my backup protocols were substandard, she lost some data - well - both WD drives were bad - I almost couldn't believe it - we had lots of problems immediately after install - these weren't the OS drives - but Windows and SMART were flummoxed. After a lost weekend, I ended up downloading the WD tools - sure enough - tons of bad sectors on both drives, confirmed by WD's own diagnostics - now what are the odds of pulling 2 identical bad drives?)

Run memtest overnight and that may rule out the RAM. It may very well be the CPU because the error is very CPU-ish. A bad CPU out of the box, though. Haven't seen it. I'm probably not as old as you -- my experience starts at Socket 478 -- but I've built maybe 200-ish PCs and never had to replace the CPU. I've rarely had to replace RAM, but RAM issues can be sneakier. They can go unnoticed for a long time if it has bad sectors that never get used. Or they can be blocks that are accessed every time you boot and instantly throw errors at you.

I hate coincidences like that. Makes me obsess over what might have caused it, rather than just accept "sometimes two things break at the same time."

I thought about running memtest while I was on hold waiting for the RMA. But, I pulled the CPU and it's packed up to go back now.

As unlikely as it seems - I cannot imagine what else can prevent a Windows DVD or UEFI from getting to a point of telling you that you can't install. I mean, if it had reinstalled Windows, gotten me back into the environment - and then crashed again in an application - I think it's a pick-em of whether or not that might be memory, something in the MB or the CPU - or, heck, a latent drive flaw.

Yeah - we just had that one - and it wasn't really that bad - and it was a design flaw, not a construction flaw.

Yeah - I've had tremendous luck with Crucial sticks. Makes me second guess every choice now that things aren't working. About the only things I kept to my usual standard, at least as to guts, was Corsair PSU and ASUS MB. Well, and the WD platter drive. I would normally have gone with Crucial on the SSD AND Ram. But, the stupid internet convinced me Samsung and G.skills were the way to go for those.

When I was in Freedos, I should have run memtest right then. But, I was too busy thinking and swapping wires out to stop for that at the time.

Either brands are fine. Too much importance is placed in brands, way too much. Crucial is good, Samsung is good, G.Skill is good. People get trigger-happy in disparaging a brand because something failed, but it's always luck of the draw at best (the exception being white-label brands like PC Chips, but you don't see much of that anymore), and at worst the issues will be model-specific rather than brand specific, and in those cases the issue is almost always related to a component sourced from a fabricator that sells to more than just the one brand.

Haven't purchased it. I hit that game so hard in the first month that I couldn't even muster a second playthrough. I need to give it a break before I do the expansions.

I'm barely @ 65-70hrs... I see you hit 225hrs pretty quickly on it.

Yeah, I was somewhere around 190-200 hours when I stopped my first playthrough (beat the game and finished everything except gwent stuff). The remaining hours were spent trudging through the first part of a second playthrough, plus my daughter likes to watch me ride the horse around and decapitate the occasional drowner.

I just found out I have to start over, when I installed Win10 and wiped my SSD I lost my saved files, guess GOG doesn't have cloud back ups.

Luckily, Hearts of Stone lets you start a game at level 32 or something like that. Not sure what gear you'll get, which can be an issue. The first monster of the DLC is insanely hard on Death March.
