I've gotten so bored with the game that when I do play now, I go around collecting and reading every book I can find.
Some of the stories are pretty well-written - I just wish Bethesda could write an interesting main plot for once.

I haven't completed the main quest yet but it doesn't look very deep. Talk about not using all the tools you have at your disposal.

After sinking quite a few hours into this game I'd have to agree with that. Pretty much every character is static and uninteresting and the main plot is rather uninvolved, it makes for a way to pass the time instead of something I really wanted to do.

I wish Bethesda would design the game and let Obsidian write it. Obsidian has always had some of the most talented RPG writers, but they suck at producing a polished result.
New Vegas actually had a great story, I thought. And it wasn't that complicated.

Regardless both games mentioned have had the most bang for the buck imo. You can add Mass Effect to that as well. I can't say most of my games have been worth $60.

If I remember correctly, I remember Todd Howard saying that they like to leave the adventuring to the adventurer, I guess even to the point where they have to do that with the weak main story. At one spectrum, you have BioWare who guides the player along toward a singular ending, while with Bethesda it is possible to never play the main story and still have infinite (albeit limited) things to do.

I can appreciate that sentiment, but I think that most of us as "adventurers" want to be afforded the opportunity to take part in something on an epic scale if we choose to. Outside of the Alduin segment of the game, the Civil War is not nearly as grand or worthwhile as it would seem from the way it pervades the setting. The various guild questlines are rewarding and allow the player to feel significant, but you're just some sort of mischief-maker the rest of the time.
I don't want to fault Bethesda too much - they wanted to make the ultimate dragon-slaying video game. And when it comes to killing dragons, you can certainly do that to the point of nausea in this game.

I haven't posted in this thread yet but have read all 177 pages and am a Skyrim addict. Happy New Year to all. 2012 is the year of the Dragon according to the Chinese. It certainly is in the gaming world.

Geez, seems like some of you guys are going overboard on the story issue.
I think the game is so huge you are losing perspective.
The main storyline still takes longer to finish than about 99% of other games out there.
I don't see any other RPGS with better story. I would give Dragon Age a slight nod with deeper character development with your followers but they also did a tremendous amount of repeating themselves.
My lvl 35 mage is still getting his arse kicked by melee types and archers so I am definitely moving to light armor and ditching the robes.

The Witcher, Mass Effect, KOTOR, etc say Hi.

I'm not trying to downplay Skyrim, it is an excellent open-world RPG game where there is so much to do it literally swamps the player with quality one-off quests(can't say that has ever happened to me before). It's been a while since I have felt confident that I spent my $65 well, and Skyrim definitely falls into that category.
But as I have played games of exceptional quality before Skyrim, I will always make comparisons to those that came before, whether they are valid or not. I just didn't find the story that engaging or interesting, certainly not to the extent that Morrowind/Oblivion captivated me. I attribute this to having played games that handle the story aspect better than Bethesda, which has rather been left behind in that category.

I'm getting frustrated with my mage.
I made some enchanted glass armor and it definitely drops my spell damage down a good bit.
BY lvl 38 melee, I was invincible for the most part but my mage keeps getting killed. Just got one shot from another mage which ticks me off because I just put about 50% magic resistance on.
Oh, and I didn't say Skyrim had the best plot ever but games like KOTOR are few and MANY MANY year between. Not fair to compare any game to KOTOR. Heck that game had a better plot than the freaking prequel movies.

Have they fixed the resistances bug? 50% magic resistance should be rather noticeable.

Yeah, they fixed the resistance bug.
This play through I stayed in the area right around whiterun and winterhold without much exploration.
I did this to keep most areas unlocked so when I enter a new area everything is leveled to my current level.
Last time I bounced around so much that half the map was probably locked at a low level.
My new gear is making a bit of a difference. I can lob fireballs indefinitely without running out of magicka.

When playing as a mage there were pretty much three keys to being successful.
1: Conjuration - Some kind of atronach is absolutely necessary. I usually rolled with a flame atronach until I got Dremora Lords
2: Armor - When wearing robes, even with heavy everything else, I got ripped through. As soon as I could smith quality armor I I ditched the robes.
3. Enchanting - I reduced Destruction cost by 25% on my helmet and armor, so it was rare for me to run out of magicka. That, along with HUGELY boosted magicka regen and fortified magicka and I rarely got touched. I started sneaking around and using a bow just to mix it up or else I'd run into every room dual casting fireballs shouting "HADOUKEN" without ever being touched.

Those fireballs are the way to go. Having it stun the enemy a bit is clutch. However, I've started sneaking and assassinating people/going in with my blade's sword to vary it up a bit.

I enchanted a glass set and now I never run out of majicka.
I've been doing better with fireballs, but I am still getting killed a lot more than with melee and on a lower difficulty setting but.....
That is actually a good thing. Having to sneak a bit and think about fights makes it more interesting than just walking in and killing everything in 2 seconds.

I took last week off from work in Lafayette and went to BR to stay with my girlfriend. Her TV is small and not HD so I didn't even bother hooking Skyrim up. I can't wait to get off work tonight to go knock out some quests.

Level 38 - been spending most of my time in blackreach.
I have so much stuff in my chest in winterhold and in whiterun that im probably about to go cash in. I need to get higher enchanting so im probably about to go enchant and make potions today.
Also, I have a daedra heart and a bunch of crimson nirnroot. What do I do with that stuff?
