They actually do go back and forth so...you could have a time when ALL of them are running into each other, blocking up everything.

Had a serious Charred Feral Ghoul attack on my new settlement.
Poor bastards didn't even get within a hundred yards. I had like 30 turrets on the side they attacked.
Plus my 880 Gauss wrecks most things. I did run into a Super Duper Super Duper Mutant Legendary mutant that took almost 5 shots to the brain to kill.

So do you guys just buy oil or what? I'm still a relatively lower level, 25, but oil is always the limiting factor in anything I do. I finally got 4 settlements up and running with over 90 defense on each and 16 plus settlers. I have at least 5 shops in each, so I should be racking in caps, correct?

I mostly make oil. Cutting fluid at the chem station. You need to pick up every bone you see.
As for racking up the caps, Still not sure how the pooling resources work. About once a week, I go to every settlement, pick up all junk and caps and store it all in Sanctuary.
Caps don't all just show up in Sanctuary.

Trashcan Carla sells shipments of oil. She is a traveling vendor. Shows up in sanctuary.
Most of my caps come from selling ammo. I always seem to have 1500+ for guns I never use,and just use that as currency.
Starlight has 19 ppl and 5 or so shops, some lvl 3. I get like 300 caps from that workbench.
Radaway and radx also sells for a ton.
I can't get enough ceramic either.
I've also been finding Fusion cores 4x at a time lately. Scrounger ftw

Got back into this last night after taking a break for a couple of weeks did the BOS last time I think I will stick with the Minutemen this go round. SO much I haven't seen in the game yet.

I blew all my ceramic upgrading power armor.
But yeah, I didn't pick up enough coffee cups apparently.
My char had 1 str forever. Carry capacity struggle was real dammit.

How many weapons do y'all run around with? I've been carrying 10-12 but I really see no need. I have the Overseer's Guardian and modded it up to 120 (only a Level 2 Gun Nut) but I'm pretty sure it, a sniper rifle, and a pistol or shotgun are the only weapons I need.

I used to carry one for each ammo type, I have only used the console command for one thing and that's to up my carry capacity, having to constantly travel back, drop, and scrap all the time was a pain and took away from game play for me.
