You will have better luck just finding rare staffs and mage armor.

By the time you're able to find/get those advanced schematics, you'll have much better equipment that you've found.

Early in the game, the best staff you can find is by killing the Hinterlands dragon. Other than that, you'll be given staff/axe/sword of the dragon schematics after arriving to skyhold, which you can make pretty powerful with modifications and runes.

I don't know what level you're at, but there is a crap ton of silverite in Emprise di lion. That metal is not class specific, so you can use it to make heavy armor for your mage or rouge. But if you're not powered up enough, you'll have your arse handed to you regularly in that area.

The best one I found was in some temple in the Western approach

By far the toughest area I've run into so far and I still have to go back to kill the dragon (or dragons?) there.

Yea, anything I can craft doesn't match up to what I have found. Most staffs I find are crap though.

Has anyone ever found a crossbow drop?

I bought this for my nephew last night and I got a text at 4AM telling me he can't stop playing and I would have to apologize to his girlfriend for him because he was busy closing rifts.

Bianca is all Varrick can use and the only way to get better is to upgrade it. One of the reasons I never really used him. At least with Sera there were plenty of good bows and I could craft something better.

I'm level 9. The rift in Fallow Mare (I think) wrecked me and I had to give up after about 8 tries so I'm probably not ready for Emprise Di Lion. Is level 9 enough to kill the Hinterlands dragon? I've only encountered him once when I was level 2 or 3 and I just ran.

I've read some stuff and watched youtube vids that say crafting is the way to go but I won't waste my time if this is the case.

Yea, you'll get wrecked.

It would be very difficult. I beat him at lvl 11, but it took me two tries and about 1hr 15 minutes.

Here's a suggestion...there are several areas in the hinterlands that have lore related to someone named Tyradda. If you open all the hinterlands regions, you will find them all. It will specifically talk about the lore related Tyradda's axe. Finding all those areas will open up a war table mission to get Tyradda's axe.

SPOILER:

It's not an axe. It's a very good staff.

Maybe early on, but endgame, crafting weapons will easily yield the best.

I think the best Staff I've found is around 120 DPS and I crafted one that is 150.

In fact most staves seem to peak at about 100 or less.

I think this applied once you started collecting stormheart, dawnstone, silverite, etc... Those tier3-tier4 metals. Which, by that time, you'll have stumbled across the grand magister/enchanter schematics.

Plus, adding the master runes put them over the top.

Damn right it's a good "axe".

I think I'm gonna try to tackle the hinterlands dragon tonight.

Don't tell me about it. I haven't been disappointed with any of the character side quests yet.

How far in the game does it appear?

Josephine was the one dealing with her family troubles, right? I did that one already.

Nothing with Cullen except beating that chump in what I assume is chess.
