Now each class can pretty much wear the same weapons with a few differences and sometimes it may look weird to see a monk with a 2 hands axe that remains on its back when he fights with his bare hands but the dps of the weapon will change it's dps biiiiig time.
So the base of ANY dps is the weapon and so should you focus on the highest number of dps you can find for your weapon if you want to have the best possible dps.
Then your stats will come in to increase it too so if i have a monk with a 2 hands dps 500 and 200 dexterity, the dexterity will increase my dps by 200% = 1500 dps.
Also the % to hit faster will upgrade your dps.
So my advice when leveling is get the best weapon possible and if you keep dying at the same spot, most of the time you just get a better weapon and you'll make it.
Vitality is also important so don't neglect it and when you'll reach hell you will have no other choices than start to integrate resistances to your stuff to survive.

yankeeundercover the answer is in the explanation you just have to apply it to the wizard.
So to recap your weapon is the base of whatever dps you will have and then the stat linked to your character will improve it.
So if you have a weapon 500 dps with 1000 intelligence then you add 1000% of your weapon dps to get your final dps = 5500 in this case.

After playing the game for a few weeks, I decided to quit the game. While it is a good game, it is also very buggy and the single player lag has killed me more than enough times. I'm hoping Torchlight 2 will be more to my liking when it is released at the end of summer. Enjoy the game guys!

Which number on the weapon should I be using to calculate..? The ##.# number or the 13-26 dmg number..?
And what spells are effected with the dps in the inv screen?
Right now I'm using a 70.4 bow with a red square gem and ~660 intel... lvl 41

Just look at your damage stat and see which weapon makes that number higher
All spells are affected by that number

Says +6719.5 Damage, but I haven't dropped my square ruby in it yet either, and I'm guessing that includes the +27% damage already?
Either way, I'm trying to rush to Level 60 before I even go on further in Hell.
