yankeeundercover the answer is in the explanation you just have to apply it to the wizard.
So to recap your weapon is the base of whatever dps you will have and then the stat linked to your character will improve it.
So if you have a weapon 500 dps with 1000 intelligence then you add 1000% of your weapon dps to get your final dps = 5500 in this case.

I've been reading a lot of posts where people didn't know how damages per second is calculated and how to make it improve depending of your class.
It's in fact very easy, each class has one primary stat to focus on for example monk it's dexterity, wizard intelligence, barbar strenght etc ...
Now each class can pretty much wear the same weapons with a few differences and sometimes it may look weird to see a monk with a 2 hands axe that remains on its back when he fights with his bare hands but the dps of the weapon will change it's dps biiiiig time.
So the base of ANY dps is the weapon and so should you focus on the highest number of dps you can find for your weapon if you want to have the best possible dps.
Then your stats will come in to increase it too so if i have a monk with a 2 hands dps 500 and 200 dexterity, the dexterity will increase my dps by 200% = 1500 dps.
Also the % to hit faster will upgrade your dps.
So my advice when leveling is get the best weapon possible and if you keep dying at the same spot, most of the time you just get a better weapon and you'll make it.
Vitality is also important so don't neglect it and when you'll reach hell you will have no other choices than start to integrate resistances to your stuff to survive.
Hope it helps a little bit ;)
tigerfan4120 that should answer your questions :nana:

I have to say that I'm kind of scared of the pvp because the gameplay of the game has a few problems that are limitating the skills required and the things we can do. For example the moving around part is pretty lame in front of WOW for example and I have to say that I am a big fan of AWSD.
After things can get pretty tricky when you try to click on someone and move at the same time ...
And then fights may bee pretty quick because of the dps that some will have so I'm scared of that too.
Now don't get me wrong I like the game and the gameplay is part of its magic but all I'm saying is I don't think that the pvp will get as fun as it is in WOW for example.
What do you guys think about that ?

Yea I've started Hell with my monk and I got my arse kicked a few times yesterday night because of some crazy packs of elites ...
The worst I met was 1 yellow that got 3 minions that you can't kill with an infinite "cast damages back to your face so you die" and they kept doing the arcane stuff that rotates and makes huge damages.
So I try to go hit this mob but he kept hiding after his 3 minions and when I finally get to him the 3 minions gather around and some of my punches are aoe that are touching the minions so guess what ... Back in my FACE !!
So I still try to survive and hit the guy as hard as I can with my 2 hand axe and they start casting these aracanes stuff rotating on top of that so I try to run but I'm fighting in the smallest corridor ever so no room to run around.
I just kept dying like a screaming hopeless kid and wanted to throw my brand new alienware computer through the window !!!
Anyway ... cool stuff in Hell ... cool stuff !!
