Ok nevermind, I was thinking of something else. So by completing this we receive a purple chest piece?

I think I may have figured out (probably not the only one who has thought this) what each characters third subclass will be. Now as to what it will provide and the way it will be used, I have no clue. But here is my thinking:
There are three damage types:
1. Arc (electrical)
2. Solar (Duh)
3. Void (No fricking clue)
Number One and Two are the current subclasses for each character type with the third one being what I believe to be the underlying damage type for the subclass:
Titan
1. Striker (Arc)
2. Defender (Void)
3. Unknown (Solar)
Hunter
1. Gunslinger (Solar)
2. Blade dancer (Arc)
3. Unknown (Void)
Warlock
1. Void walker (Void)
2. Sunsinger (Solar)
3. Unknown (Arc)
As you can see each have two of the damage types as the basis for their subclass of which none of three character classes currently have the same two damage type sub classes. Since there is obviously a third subclass for each character and using the above information, it leads me to believe that the damage types listed in number three for each character class will be the mysterious third subclasses for each character class.
To me, this seems like the most logical possibility for what the third subclasses are.

I'm currently sitting at Level 21 and I have not even SEEN a legendary (purple) drop at all. I've farmed the earth cave, and i've even tried the story mission where you kill the Thrall and got nothing out of that. Do I just have the worst luck ever?

Welcome to the Cryptarch is a Douche Club.
Only legendaries I have were purchased.

where, how and with what do you use to purchase legendary gear?
Posted on 9/24/14 at 1:08 pm to USAF Hart
from any of the faction leaders and quartermasters
the vanguard armorer is in the basement around the table, the three class guys. i dunno how to describe it. they accept vanguard marks.
the crucible quartermaster is in the previous room and accepts crucible marks
the grey worm (or whatever it is) guy...
this guy:
sells gear over by the hangar but you need to level up that faction to purchase the gear.

Pretty much.. so time to get grinding. If you want it, you got to earn it because nothing is given to you in this game...unless you come in last every time in Crucible like I did when I got my exotic machine gun. So you have three options:
1. Grind it out
2. Suck as hard as you can in Crucible
3. Give the cryptarch blowjobs in the Tower bathrooms like Galvos does
But if you want a guaranteed legendary, you can perform (and complete) one of the queens bounties which will unlock one of her missions and upon completion you get a Legendary armor piece for your class.

Do one of the queen's bounties and the queen's mission after. It'll take 2-3 hours to do everything, but you're guaranteed to get some type of good gear.

What level should you be to do the Queens Bounty and Mission stuff?
I'm assuming I'm too low at Lvl 22?

I will be able to play tonight, and I want to do a Queen's mission.

I'm not sure what level you need to be, depends on the level of the mission. You'll need 3 people at least. Most of them are lvl 22-24 range I think.

That is the just of it. You have to do everything a lot to get good gear. That is MMORPG standard.
You say you have done the loot cave but unless they patched it recently you have not done it long enough. Even if you are unlucky with getting purple drops you would eventually get enough blue drops that you would be lv 24.
This is very boring but if you sit there for 4 hours or so there is no way you are still lv 21. or you have the worst luck in the world.
Bottom line is everything takes time, and that is the point. Otherwise why keep playing?

I am pretty sure it is a lv 24 mission. Which means lv 22 or higher can do it I believe. I would love to do it tonight if you want. I have like 5 bounties complete so I can do it a number of times.
Posted on 9/24/14 at 2:36 pm to Mystery
I did 4 of the bounties yesterday so I can do 4. Gonna do more today too.
