No joke. I literally just got back to the office with my copy. I might take a vacation day tomorrow...

So my first (not last) dumb question.
For each level, one gains an attribute point? In which case, if one started as a "deprived" they would ultimately have better stats than someone who started as one of the other classes?

No, all builds have the same amount of attribute points.
Deprived actually kind of sucks because it is hard to min max with because everything starts at 10.

To follow-up on what he said, your build will have certain dump stats, which you want to keep as low as possible.
So the cleric starts at level 7 with 96 stat points. The deprived starts with 90 at level 1. If you subtract the the points for levels 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 each has the same base number of points at the same level.
Assuming you intend to build your cleric into a generic miracle build, your Int is more or less useless, thus the cleric who effectively moved 3 Int into another stat is more efficient in the long run.
I wouldn't worry too much about min/maxing your character on the first run. Just have a general idea of the type of build you are going for and do your best to hit that.
There is room to play min/max later.
Also if spears work the same as DS1, those often make a great PvE weapon for beginners.

Thanks guys!
I've been trying to read up while at work today -- but work keeps getting in the way.

I'll be resisting getting this early on. Will force myself to finish Scholars of the First Sin before moving on.

I was supposed to finish darkest dungeon (which doesnt seem to be happening anytime soon) and then play xcom2 and some of the fallout DLC... I think DS3 overrules that.

Early first impressions:
-Game is BEAUTIFUL.
-Great enemy placement.
-Gameplay is DS1: rolling, parrying, etc.
Using the Uchi I picked up from the homeless guy outside Firelink and got a Lothric knight sword drop. Close to the first boss.

frick it i cant wait, I'm going after work to pick it up, playing DS2 just had me craving it, I was trying to get through DS2 first but not happening
Watching playthroughs on twitch sold me. it looks like it took the best things from BB and DS1-2 and put them all in a gumbo pot

My first character I tried to do the magic class and died to the boss 3x. switched to a knight and killed him without taking damage

You can get an Estus shard and the silver serpent ring in Firelink shrine.

That's exactly how my win went down, and I was frostbitten to boot. Having to call it a day for now.

Finally started up the game. Beat the optional ice thing in the first zone, then proceeded to one try the first boss... Who was a lot easier than the optional ice guy
ETA: I started as thief, love my curve sword characters from 1 & 2

Just walking right in melee range of boss lets you avoid almost everything he does. A lot easier than cleric beast or father g from BB.
