I almost never run past mobs. You get a ton of flask in this game and there is almost always a shortcut or fire right by a boss.
If I die at a boss it is because I couldn't heal not because I did not have heals.
Just cleared Smouldering Lake and haven't felt the need to run by anything.
Play how you feel comfortable but yes, you can run.

Play how I feel comfortable? Is running around screaming count as comfortable?
I am so damn bad at this game. Does not fit my play style at all

I do it if I start dying a lot at one boss. I don't want the mob's attack patterns messing the approach I'm taking with the boss up. There are so many attack patterns in this game (and "minibosses") that a regular mob can have a unique approach to beat it and I want to be focus on the boss of the time's movement patterns.

Your first SoulsBorne game is ALWAYS the hardest. There are just certain mechanics that aren't really a part of any other games that take a lot of adjusting to. Precision and patience are so important. I will say that you picked a really good game to enter the series with IMO. I don't think it's the easiest of them, but I think that some of the mechanics changes and enemy styles in this game lend themselves more to helping newer players get adjusted.
Just make sure you're adjusted by midgame

The dodging has been the hardest thing to figure out. I can hold up a shield and just back away from every attack, but I can never get a good chance to get in some hits that way. When I try and dodge to the side of an attack, I just get nailed to the ground and get my shite stomped in.

Yeah, my first game was dark souls and I turtled the whole with a shield. My next game demon souls, I went magic build and started really drilling down dodging. By dark souls 2 I started learning Dex builds with lots of stamina
3 games, 3
I wasn't comfortable with dodging until my third game... You are far from bad, our behind

This is my fourth game of the series and I still get smashed. It's fun.

well I just met Pontiff... and I'm starting to question my own existence in this world

Stick close and be aggressive. I'm not a fan of some of these bosses and their endless stamina and adds.

He feels like Fume knight, if Fume Knight was given the Chloranthy Ring and infinite green blossoms, oh and decided to let him dual-wield a new magic sword as well... oh well, I only fought him 4 times, I'll pick back up on him tomorrow when I'm not exhausted from the day.
ETA: I might have to rethink my "purist" mentality on this fight and use some "buffs"

I parried him with the katana weapon art in the first phase and watched his clone in the second, as it telegraphs his moves.

Not sure if you want to, but the summon outside pontiffs fog is extremely helpful. Anri as well.
I made it a point to beat them all alone, but summoning is a damn good alternative.

Yeah, I will not summon

Took down he Abyss Watchers last night. I almost beat them the first time somehow, but then he wrecked me like 10 or so times before I was able to take him down.
The music was amazing as well. Best boss fight so far.

The road of sacrifices/farron Keep area is by far the largest area in the game and it is stacked with bonfires. You will be begging for more soon, in areas like the cathedral of the deep.
Yep, made it through this area and was out of Estus. So relieved when I opened that door back to the bonfire. These are the moments the game was missing early on.
Has anyone had errors occur in this area? While in that chapel or whatever by the bonfire in Cathedral of the deep I had errors occur twice last night and the game shutdown. Luckily I didn't lose any progress but had me worried something would be corrupted.

For most enemies you should dodge towards the enemy, so you end up behind them. Don't just dodge left or right.

The NPC summons generally tend to be a good balance between "helpful friend to lessen the pain" and "totally trivializes the fight."
I don't really enjoy the PvP that much but need 30 pale tongues and 30 vertebra shackles(and saw grass and whatever , so I need to decide to farm them from mobs or cheese it another way.

I have only had one error and it happened in the first area of the game.

Or dodge backwards in certain situations. In and out are your two best bets. Left and right are for special purposes.
