We’re happy to announce that we will soon begin testing the long-awaited feature that will allow users to change their PlayStation Network Online ID from their PlayStation 4 system. The PSN Online ID Change feature beta will be a part of the PlayStation Preview Program, and will become available to select users that have pre-registered as testers for previous PS4 system software betas. During the preview program, you will be able to change your online ID as many times as you want. The first change is free, and changes after that will cost $9.99 USD / CAD. For PlayStation Plus members, it will cost $4.99 USD/ CAD after the first change. Changes to online ID can be made through the Settings menu or via the Profile page of your PS4. When you change your online ID, you will have the option to display your previous ID with your new ID, so your friends can recognize you. Once you decide to display your old ID or not, you won’t be able to adjust this after completing the online ID change process. This feature is compatible with PS4 games originally published after April 1, 2018, and a large majority of the most-played PS4 games that were released before this date.

The preview program for this feature is scheduled to conclude at the end of November 2018. The full rollout of the feature to all PS4 owners is planned for early 2019, so stay tuned for updates down the road!

Surprised it took this long, seems like something that should have been easy. Given all the weird caveats I guess they did something weird originally that made it technically difficult, little assumptions like "the name will never change" can have a domino effect on how people develop things as they take shortcuts and what not.
Do we know if they are still enforcing uniqueness? That's the main reason people get stuck with names they don't like. Many online gaming systems these days often allow for your display name to be whatever you want, uniqueness be damned, and a unique ID is hidden behind the scenes deeper in the settings. That type of system to me seems like the ideal one ultimately, but if it's just simple name change, still a big improvement.

I thought they changed their mind?

Its about time but they are still making it way too complicated. I remember people changing their name all the time on 360. It was simple and easy.

Scruffy’s name is perfect. It is menacing and reflects his aggressive personality.

It's most likely due to how they set up their online's infrastructure with name keys, etc.

This has to be one of the funniest things ever from consoles. Glad they are finally getting around to something simple.
You could do it way back in the x360 days, but I think MSFT eventually made you pay for it after so many. Do not know if it is still that way.

I posted this the last time it came up, PSN game files are attached to the user names, not a user ID number. If the user name changes, a lot of the game files won't be associated with the original accounts.

I can finally capitalize LSU!!!!!

MS will allow you to change it once for free. After that you have to pay for it.

That is still a horrible excuse for being lazy. They could of just kept the original name as the key and added a display name. The display name could still be forced to be unique globally.
They could of also setup a new key and done a re-link process.
Companies with less money and more data everyday change much more complex systems.
Sony was just plain lazy.
