Fresh out of games to play. Just beat Banishers: Ghost of New Eden and that was surprisingly fun, but bought Nioh 2 and Residenr Evil 4. Huge fan of Souls type games, but know nothing of Nioh games other than Wo Long. I believe the same company made both games. Is it ok to play Nioh without having played the original?

You should be fine. I never finished it but I was enjoying the combat before I got sidetracked

They are essentially the same game in almost all the mechanics. I believe there’s a couple new things with the yokai transformations and a few new weapons but other than that it’s pretty much a carbon copy. I don’t recall the story having anything to do with the first, but it’s not like it’s got a groundbreaking narrative anyway.

Story is nonsense and I can't stand the mission structure, but the combat system is great and it's a lot of fun to do the Yokai counters and master the different weapon types. Based Tonfa user here

You're in for a treat, the Nioh franchise is AMAZING (I've played over 1,000 hours across the two games).

Storywise you won't miss anything by starting with 2 (except for one minor-ish plot point towards the end), however, if you start with 2, it'll be much more difficult to go play 1 based on the QoL improvements they made in 2.

HIGHLY recommend starting with 1 and if you ever get stuck and want an OP summon, just let me know! Last weekend I actually dipped back in for co-op and I was getting summoned almost instantly.

ETA: The Nioh games are 1000000000x better than Wo Long.

I pretty much agree with everything Sloth said. Playing the first one up front is just easier on you since going backwards can be pretty jarring (QoL improvements are significant, FPS cap is 120 in Nioh 2 instead of 60 in the first game).

I will add on that the Nioh games are much different from Souls games as the Souls series has very shallow combat (at least in my opinion) whereas Nioh emphasizes a complex combat system. The equipment in general is completely different as Nioh has item rarity, full blown set bonuses, and all kinds of equipment refining you can do for the purpose of build crafting. Souls games generally have very little of that

In other words, Nioh and Souls games have more differences than similarities.

This is a very important point. There's a meme on the Nioh subreddit because there are constant posts from people calling themselves "Souls veterans" where they question why they're struggling with Nioh, and the response is always, "stop playing it like a Souls game, it's its own thing, learn the mechanics!"

So yeah, if you try to play it like a Souls game, you're going to have a bad time.

Yeah Nioh and Nioh 2 are some of the better "Soulslike" clones to play for fans of the genre, along with the more recent Wo Long.

They set themselves apart by being more "arcadey" than the Souls game, they are not open world RPG's, the level/mission based structure works well for them, that and the Diablo style loot pinata going on. Which is fun but also a little tiresome if you're tryign ot max all your gear constantly.

Nioh 2 only very tangentially relates to Nioh 1 story wise (mostly at the end) so you really aren't missing anything by playing 2 before 1.

Nioh 1 has a fixed protagonist and better overall story and characters.

Nioh 2 added a few new mechanics, more weapons, and does better with enemy variety.

All three games should be very cheap though. They're all good and none of them that long.

Getting my arse kicked right now. Are you supposed to run past the first big mini boss guy right at the start? Dude is whooping my butt. Managing stamina is a mfer right now.

Actually yes, Nioh 2 thought they would be funny by putting a full blown boss fight as the 2nd enemy you encounter the game. Unlike regular boss fights, he's completely optional. He's definitely way OP for a new player but certainly not impossible. I vaguely remember he drops some sort of key or something. Not required ot beat hte level, may open a shortcut or something.

So yeah, skip him and come back later if you wish.

I think the most important skills to unlock early are Running Water: Earth, Running Water: Man and Running Water: Heaven in the Samurai skill tree as they allow you to ki pulse on dodging.

Also, early on, using a strong attack, with the axe, in high stance, will easily break horns on the big yokai and stun them. This also works really well to stunlock revenants if you're farming for gear or ochoko cups.

Finally getting the hang of this game and damn it's fun now. Love playing with the Axe. That's my fave so far. Just beat the first main boss.

Despite not being my favorite, the axe is still a fun time. Violently deleting things with very hits is pretty satisfying

Glad you're enjoying the game

Spear is easy mode IMO so that's what I used. You can really abuse the range and the moveset is extremely easy to use.

There are much higher skill cap weapons though.
