Nintendo Switch Controllers and Accessories

Santa is bringing my kids a Switch this year. I know that they make different controllers and there are aftermarket ones as well. Should I go with the official Nintendo ones? Is there an aftermarket brand that you recommend? What about the x-box style controllers? I have 3 kids. How many joy-cons do I actually need? Thanks.

the switch pro controller is in the top 3 best controllers ive ever used. i'd get the official nintendo ones. also, if you are thinking about doing getting them, do it sooner rather than later due to supply issues

Will all 3 be playing together? I think you can possibly get by at a minimum with 3 joy-cons.
I'd recommend getting at least 1 Pro controller.
Then get a second set of joy-con and the grip attachment, for 4 joy-cons total plus the pro controller.

The Pro controller is a non-negotiable, IMO. Especially if you want to play Breath of the Wild, or something similar yourself.
I'd stick with official Nintendo products. They might have to be sent in a pair at a time due to Joy-Con drift issues, but at least they back it up with free repairs on them.

Get at least one pro controller. I think it’s in the debate for best controller of all time. Just perfect and very comfortable in your hands.

Official Nintendo products only
As others have stated, get the Pro controller and two additional joy-con controllers. Get a charging base for the controllers, I picked one up for pretty cheap off of Amazon that’s set up for both joy con and the pro controllers.

I personally bought a couple of $20 "pro" style controllers that have worked great, but i understand the call to get the official ones.
I would also recommend like an accessory starter kit. Got one pretty cheap on amazon. Best thing it came with are little things that the joy cons can insert into

I think the only unofficial hardware we have is a USB-C charging grip for the Joy-Cons that has a 18000mA battery built-in.

Thanks for the advice. Any other add-ons other than the grips? Screen protectors? Etc?

We have screen protectors on all 3 of our Switches.

Pro Controller and an 8Bitdo, which I really like in terms of feel. Somewhere between old school and PS2.

Screen protector. Carrying case (I prefer the slim ones that fit in a backpack, my brother's kids all have the big square ones that can house everything including the dock). If you wind up buying extra joycons, get a joycon charging base so they keep a charge. Memory card if you're going to be downloading games to it.

I enjoy the joy-cons and have never had an interest in getting a pro controller.
We have 2 sets of Nintendo Joy-Cons and one set of aftermarket. They all work just fine.
ETA: I agree with the above poster about the screen protector and the carrying case.
You should also get a MicroSD card. 256GB should be more than enough.

Back when I bought my first Switch, the only way I could get my hands on one was to buy a bundle that had BotW and a pro controller and I don't remember what else. I don't think I would have gone out of my way to buy it, as I mostly use handheld mode, but when I'm playing on the dock it's very nice to have.

I have a corded controller I use sometimes if I just really want a "normal" controller, but I really like using two joy-cons with the grip.

As many have stated, get a pro controller, 2 if you don’t feel like hearing your kids bitch about who gets to use it

I play PS. I might have to get that for me.
