Imo the gamecube largely failed because of the advent of online multiplayer and the gamecube had no online content. The gamecube library was pretty damn good by the end of its life. It was a cool little system, but of course like nintendo always does they have to do something different (the mini discs and the lack of dvd playback).
That strategy worked when the majority of games on each console were exclusive but almost everything now is cross platform so nintendo will remain behind the curve until they make their default controllers normal and their consoles are easier to port games to.
What I was saying earlier is that nintendo would be fine with their current strategy which is relying on first party content only if they have software constantly being released which they haven't on the wii u yet.
ETA: Nintendo is still in denial over their loss of rare. Their games are what really defined the N64, their last console that appealed to all gamers.
