New Gaming Rig

So I am looking to build a new rig for my son (12). I have not had a desktop in my house since 2009. I last built a rig in 2004 so not sure if it is easier now or not. This doesn't have to be a super high end rig but I do want a path for upgradeability down the line. I would like to keep it in the 850 range without monitor/speakers. I need everything though - PS, case, etc.
When I was building, Anandtech, Arstechnica were my resources and Newegg was where I purchased most of my stuff.
So can anyone give me suggestions for around 850? AMD vs Intel? Radeon vs Nvidia?

I had my friend just get that exact setup for 850
Nvm he got a great deal and those prices are gone.

Ryzen for CPUs is for sure the best value out there.
I'm no expert and it's pretty easy. I find it pretty fun and rewarding.
PCPartPicker is a really good source. Makes sure everything you have is compatible, and you can get your build together and links built into the website shows you current prices from different merchants. Click the links and buy everything very easily. Love that site.
I've bought most of my parts from Amazon and Newegg, mainly Amazon honestly.
You should be able to build a pretty good machine on 850. Good luck!

Visit PC Partpicker and put something together lots of examples in your budget that is where we went when we built my sons last year.

For the first time in my life (Because I was 10 when AMD had better chips) I will recommend a Ryzen chip for most builds.
I've soured on Intel as these fricksticks have taken the Apple approach to the chip market.
I have started researching a bit as my 5 year old machine is starting to become less state of the art and I will need to convert it into a productivity center in another year. Trying to squeeze at least one more year out of it.
