They are porting OG FF7 on just about every platform known to mankind, so it makes sense to me that this remake would not be the exact same game with a new coat of paint.
I'm excited to see this new take on the game and to compare it to the original. I just played through the original for the first time about a month ago, and it has aged very well. I just hope that one day they are able to restore those pre-rendered backgrounds.

Seriously. You can play this on almost anything. It's pretty much Skryim at this point. This remake is an expensive endeavor, so it makes sense that they would tailor it to get a bigger market interested in it and, you know, actually make money. I get the love for turn based, but it's niche at this point and doesn't move the needle for a lot of gamers. I know a lot of you with the FFVII nostalgia want this to be a love letter to you from SE, but it's just not going to happen. They lost a ton of money when FFXIV launched and they had to totally reboot it. With this expensive project, of course they are going to try to maximize profit.

Honest question, because it's been forever since I played this and I think I only got halfway: I know it's a preferred game style, but was the turn based aspect of this game all that groundbreaking or different? I want to say the truly memorable parts of this game were the story, character, settings, and music. I think if they were to sacrifice something from the original, I'd have to say turn based combat would be my choice.

I think a turn-based FF would sell well. I'm not sure why SquareEnix thinks westernizing their games means getting rid of turn-based battles. FF sells in the west based on name recognition not the battle system.
What turn based games that do exist are niche games but they're not niche simply because they are turn based.

Was it ground breaking? No but it did not need to be.
Let's just leave it as you don't like turned based. Some of us do.
FF15 combat was god awful.
Not saying I would boycott this game for the new combat system though. From the limited amounts we have seen it looks much better than 15. Character swap, actual magic, materia on weapons.

I am positive it would.
And turn based is not dead like some seem to think.

Not arguing this fact at all. I wish, for the sake of the fans, that they did incorporate TB, but I get why they didn't.

Yeah, it kind of is.

See Resident Evil 2. A game can stay truthful and still make a ton of money. Combat was improved but still felt the same. I am hopeful for FF7 and that they still keep it relatively slow in combat.

How so?
Persona 5, Dragonquest 11, Trails of cold steel 3.
Are all recent games that are still true to it.

No it wasn’t.
Lets just leave it as you not liking change and wanting Square to cater to your nostalgia.

No. It was just bad. Flashy teleporting but just bad. It is not like I don't play action games with actual good combat.
And I have long given up on Square Enix to make a game that I would like. SquareSoft is dead and has been for a long time.

I don’t understand the hate FFXV get. I loved that game. If FFVII is the same story with upgraded combat system I’ll be very happy.

Couldn’t agree more. The finished product now, the Royal edition I believe, is absolutely fantastic.
I get it, a lot of people don’t like change. I enjoy turn-based fwiw as well. If this FFVII brought turn-based back I’d still buy it, but the majority of people complaining about what Square puts out nowadays are just ‘Get off my lawn’ gamers.
And I don’t mean that as an insult, it happens to almost everyone at some point regarding some interest in life.

It wasn't the combat that bothered me. It was the absolutely incomprehensible plot and boring open world. The rushed later half of the game was actually the most enjoyable for me.

You shouldn't assume what other people think. You have no clue at all what I think. That is for sure.
The game was lacking in tons of areas, and not just in combat. Which was shallow, easy and boring compared to a good action game. That is my opinion.
But everyone is allowed to like if they did. Good for you.
As for complaining about what Square puts out these days... It is not even the same company nor the same talent working there. People need to move on from the past, I agree there.

The game was 40% complete when they pushed it out.
Have you played the finished product?

I’m speaking in a generality than aimed directly at you. I’m not trying to be a dick. It just irks me when people shite on a design choice before the game has even come out.
For all I know it will release in a decade and will be awful

I have tons of faith in this project. They have not shown much but what they have shown is very true to the original game. The only thing new is the combat (which I am hoping will be good) and that Sephiroth scene from the trailer. He shouldn't show that early.
