re: New FF7 REMAKE Trailer (with gameplay)
While I would absolutely prefer the return of turn based play, I'll be playing the shite out of this even with a modernized combat system.

You'd figure the brains over at Square Enix would be able to come up with a new and refreshing spin to add excitement to a turn based system or "modernize" it... but I'll still play whatever they put out just for the nostalgia alone.

FWIW, I thought the revamped combat system of XV was pretty fun. But unlike previous installments in the franchise, once you got leveled up and good gear, there weren't really any combat challenges like Omega Weapon from VIII, or Penance from X International Version. Those bosses would lay waste to you in a heartbeat even if you were seasoned and conditioned.

My favorite part of XV was just the openness and interactions that made you feel like you were really part of the world. The atmosphere was unbelievable and even after I've ran four complete playthroughs I still load it back up every once in a while to catch fish, replay hunt missions and just cruise the map in the ol Regalia.

That is stupid.

Why has the world thrown turn based away?

Because they don't sell in big numbers anymore. People still like it, but they want to do more than just make it prettier. They want to update the mechanics and combat systems as well. I can't really blame them for that. There's also going to be some huge changes to the writing and localization as it's infamous for some poor translations.

Just wait and see to try it before giving up on it entirely.

For the life of me, I don't understand how people get this way.

I am positive it would. And turn based is not dead like some seem to think.

It's not dead, but no turn based game has done well (outside of Pokemon ofc, but that's not at all relevant to this conversation) in the West in over a decade now. The highest selling turn based JRPG in that time period was Final Fantasy XIII and that was a very fast paced game.

Square has made high quality turn based RPGs since and they generally sell ok (~1m), but that would be a complete disaster.

Persona 5 did extremely well.

Persona 5 did do very well. For a Persona game. It still sold about half of the worst selling mainline Final Fantasy games. That said, Persona's primary gameplay has more in common with visual novels than a more combat focused game like Final Fantasy (at least imo). Everyone plays them differently, but I spend only 15-20% of game in the combat areas?

ETA: Really don't want to turn this into a Persona vs FF thing, because I love both a lot. I don't want Persona to be more like FF, but innovative combat is ingrained into Final Fantasy. Without the technological limitations, I completely understand why they want to evolve combat too.

A few years ago when ffXV came out I argued tooth and nail on this board that turn based was a thing bc of the console limitations and while I enjoyed it back then there's no reason to have it now. (Outside of Persona, etc)

Just glad someone recognizes this bc literally no one else had my view back then

My biggest complaint with the newer combat systems is that it feels largely unfocused.

You teleport around, mash x, and I rarely used spells. The magic/spells felt like they were tacked on and I rarely used them. Summons show up randomly.

If you’re gonna replace turn based, I’d hope for something more engaging. So many other studios do active combat systems way better than square could ever hope to.

How is this fair? When has any turn based JRPG ever put up huge numbers in the west, besides FF? 13 doesn't count because it was only kind of turn based in your opinion? Persona doesn't count because it has other mechanics outside of combat?

Final Fantasy sales. That is the bottom line.
