There are few bosses in the Zelda franchise more annoying than Moldorm in the Tower of Hera. Only the third dungeon in Link to the Past, and he takes me quite a few tries to beat every time. It's the pits, not the boss itself that make it so frustrating.

I thought I'd bump this since I finally finished
Majora's mask for the first time. The final form of the last boss was quite challenging. The temple bosses in that game were a joke, though. I had to beat Goht 4 times for various side quests and Gyorg twice. Gyorg didn't even get a hit on me the second time.

I'm moving on to Oracle of Ages and Seasons for the gameboy, since the semester has started and I can sit at the UC looking like a dork between classes.

I didn't, no. Actually, I completely forgot about that. Looks like I have something else to do to satiate my completionist urge.

ETA: Yeah, I was missing a non-transformation mask. The Postman's Hat. I guess I'll have to do the Anju and Kafei side quest again. Not that I mind that much, because it's a really good story.

If Nintendo would use dual thumbsticks, they wouldn't need the Z-lock anymore and combat would be a lot better. It was a great addition for the N64 though, for sure

skyward sword takes advantage of the wii motion plus, so sword strikes are calculated and precise...i loved the z lock and that was pretty inovative considering all of the games on ps2 and 3 that utilize a similar control scheme...GTA off the top of my head

I'm with you, but don't bring GTA into this. GTA was great, but the controls were atrocious.

with the z lock, i wasn't sure if you were talking about combat...like just button mashing or for camera angle.

yeah...GTA had alright controls but I loved the z lock shooting...I must have spent over 100 hours on gta 3 during my free periods at boarding school

Dual thumbsticks allow you to control the camera in 3rd person action/adventure games. In turn, you get a lot more control in combat. The z-lock was a huge addition to combat for the N64 because it didn't have dual thumbsticks. At launch, Super Mario 64 used the z trigger to put the camera directly behind Mario. It would have been unplayable without it, just like Zelda would have been unplayable in 3D without z-lock.

which is why that game was so great...though i do remember stopping several times, looking in the direction i wanted and then pushing z to get the camera straight, but for the times, I'd say those games had great camera angles.

There were games in which you could use the C-buttons to control the camera. I think the N64 controller would have been fine had it retained the X and Y buttons from the previous consoles. Having just A, B, and a Z button on the back made fluid control programming difficult.

It was just an ill-conceived controller design. Nintendo went for unique, recognizable style over utility, and some of the games made us pay the price.

ETA: The Gamecube controller sucks too. I do like the Wii Classic controller, though.

Those c-buttons were terrible. I got a blister from having to hold c-up to run forward in Turok.

The N64 came out in September '96. I think OoT came out in November '99. It didn't revolutionize controls for 3d gaming at all really. I'm not bashing it at all; it was my favorite N64 game.

98 actually. The targeting system as well as a action button was pretty revolutionary.

Yeah, I was already corrected.

Context sensitive buttons had been used in a bunch of games before Zelda, but Zelda did really perfect it and use it extensively. Good call. We've discussed the targeting system ad nauseum at this point.

And ReDeads are the worst. Once you know how to deal with Like-Likes (a close second), they aren't THAT bad. Redeads in Ocarina are just terrible. Aside from using Din's Fire (which is certainly noobish), there is no reliable way to kill them without taking alot of damage.

How does the Gamecube controller suck? It seems to have taken all the flaws of the N64 controller and to have corrected them completely. I thought it was all in all a great controller, debatably the best of that generation (along with the Duelshock, X-Box's just was awful for that generation).

Because the c-stick was a crappy 2nd thumbstick.

The original controller for the Xbox (we called it the Duke) was HUGE and therefore sucked, but the smaller Microsoft controllers that came out later were by far the best controller from that generation.

PS2 controllers were good, but the handles caused your thumbs to come from too far to the side, IMO.

eta: Gamecube controllers were great for games that had no use for a precise 2nd thumbstick.

Went in with this and left thoroughly disappointed. It made the final fight a complete joke.
