Understanding why it's fun, or understanding in general?
For most missions, you have a fail state, either when 50 minutes are up or you die 3 times, whatever comes first. There are some that are actually 15 minutes long, which REALLY stinks if you don't know where to look for them.
I heard on a podcast this morning about some of the high level hunts, you can spend 30-40 minutes on it and you'll get a message saying "target has left the area", and it's a fail

It's a grind to bring a monster down. Lot's of dodging, retreating, attack, dodge again. Very Dark Souls like (or at least I've been told). It's a pretty dense game as far as systems, but I've played a lot of FFXIV, an MMO, and after learning all the ins and outs of that, I can stomach pushing through the "how the hell does this work" pieces, and once you get it down for the most part, extremely rewarding. But yeah, not for everyone.

Definitely not for everyone and is truly a carrot on a stick type game. It is addictive. With a full time job and a healthy relationship, I've still managed to put in 78 hours of game time so far. Just when you complete a set in HR, another new shiny comes along that makes you want it.
Trying to kill Koshala with anything but a bow is tedious af.

I've tried a few close range weapons just to have something to switch things up. Long sword, dual blades, nothing really clicking. My friend loves insect glaive, lots of button mashing, so I'll try that soon.

So what makes this game so addictive?
For me, it’s the fact that it’s actually a rewarding grindfest.
I loved grinding for a gun with a certain roll in Destiny 1, it’s kind of like that, but you know what you are looking for and know what you have to fight to get it, even though that specific isn’t guaranteed.
It isn’t easy and you have to learn from your mistakes.

As far as the lance...you won't die...ever...shouldn't anyhow lol. The first time I fought Kushala, I went in with my tier7 diablos cb and figured I could whack through him just like all the others. Equipped with flash pods, I knew he was gonna be in the air a lot. So after 12 flash pods and 50 minutes,0 carts, and a hurt but not injured Kushala, the hunt ended. I immediately went back in with my bow and killed him in 15 minutes.

The only monster that ever carted me with a lance was rathalos in low rank. That was until I figured out the fight and got less aggressive.

Made it from Zorah to killing Nergigante this weekend, with a full set of Uragaan gear.
Unblockable attack? Not anymore. Uragaan set bonus is amazing.
One more Nerg kill and I will get his Lance done and be able to go on to the Elder dragons

Insect Glaive has changed my life.

Took a stab at nergigante last night. Got rekt but didn’t bring along any cool drinks. Dumb decision.
I’ve killed Kirin already but am I right in thinking these elder dragons need to be taken with a more cautious approach? I can’t get in and wail on them like I could with earlier marks. I get punished.
Also these kinda aoe attacks a lot of them have have made me change things up - Bazel’s bombs, kirin’s lightning. Nerg just has insane reach on lots of his attacks and is quick. I can get two hits with long sword in between his attacks then he’s attacking again

Kirin isn't too bad, Teostra is a pain, bring flashbugs so you can stun him when he tries to leave an area, makes the fight a lot easier, flash him when he tries to nova as well. When you fight Vaal Hazak, have plenty of nullberries, Xeno isn't that hard, just have to watch out for her beam. I've found the tempered monsters really require some thought.
Insect Glaive is fun as hell! Just tried it out last night.

In still not in the habit of grabbing juice with my bug for buffs. Red makes a big difference on attacks for sure.
