Yeah I know haha lol downvote me and insult me. I likely won’t even be returning to this thread I just haven’t seen this talked about here outside of one thread I made months ago when the demo came out.
Well I got 72 hours early access with the preorder and due to some work and fam things haven’t got as much time as I won’t with it yet. Definitely haven’t beaten it and probably about 15 hours in. It is frankly absolutely amazing how well this game came together and plays and looks even better than the demo.
1) For anyone put off typically by the difficulty of these games: Lies of P isn’t that….really. It’s a very very challenging game that does some interesting things if you didn’t like needing to perfect parry in Sekiro you might wanna skip this one however Lies of P does offer mitigation and strategies for you if you can’t just for some reason nail that optimal path. The game honestly isn’t that hard I haven’t died anywhere near I normally would in a game like this. It offers you dummies to practice the stagger, or what they call groggy, system right before the initial boss before the hub and the initial credits.
2) This game absolute oozes style and polish and love and care. From the blood splatter onto your character after a special kill, the animations, the city, it is absolutely inspired in a way by BB visually but takes advantage of a decades worth of technology improvements to make it look 20x better than it ever did
3) And finally to address something usually putting off some gamers from souls likes. The story. This is NOT a story and narrative told in Miyazazi and FromSoft fashion. It has lore, fascinating lore, but it’s not 95% lore. There is a compelling narrative and through line here even on the level or I’d say much above Sekiro. It speaks very philosophically about things like the human consciousness and condition or what it even means to be human and how much or that can be sacrificed and be maintained
I know I know too long didn’t read lol haha td01241 sucks. I just wanted to put this here for anyone still either on the fence, or typically not “clicking” with these games for various reasons. I 100% think you should jump in head first and man imo this game is better than Elden Ring in very certain ways. Elden ring wanted to be all things to all people. This doesn’t. It has very original ideas and new concepts brought to the genre is a hyper focused on delivering more or less a tight experience with a bit more wiggle room than Sekiro for struggling players who can’t master 1 single mechanic. Also, finally, yes you can summon spirit NPCs for bosses but takes a valuable consumable resource.
Grounding this entire dark fantasy story of some truly horrific shite in Pinocchio was also truly a brilliant idea and a match made in heaven. The lie and truth mechanic inherent to the story is present and shows up often. Yes it has story and gameplay impacts on who you lie to and who you tell the truth to, however I won’t mention anything else about it because how that mechanic not only affects the story the gameplay itself is such a joy to experience for yourself.
And to end this massive endorsement if anyone still isn’t sure but is curious the demo is still free and available and is VERY generous with it’s length of more or less 5 hours of the game depending on player and 3 major bosses. However know that as I said above while all the same game is the same the demo isn’t as polished or nailed down mechanically which matters a ton in this game that has a huge amount of focus on perfect blocking. Also do note however that unlike say FF16 your demo data does not transfer at all to your full game purchase you will start from scratch
Also something I just remembered Bloodborne fans will be happy to know a certain version of the rally mechanic is back and present but this post is long enough play the game and see for yourself.
Everyone here knows I love FF, and I am telling you this game is objectively better than FF16 which was pretty good sometimes great in its own right. Go get this game for real.

Also one more word in just the structure of the game and how it forms itself. The game doesn’t do the FromSoft you must die to this boss thing. It doesn’t do anything but put your directly into the game with a slight voice over guiding you the Hub which is a hotel in this city, the woman speaking is more or less what I can the doll from BB but an actual deep character.
You’re put into directly with a choice of three classes and each a weapon type then put through what is very clearly a more tutorial like recreating or homage to Central Yarnam. The game has A LOT of concepts and things you need to grips with but churns them out at a smooth pace as you make your way along to the goal given. It also has a permanent “guide” in the pause menu where all tutorials and tool tips are saved and can be viewed. This all culminates with a boss that you must beat actually for real for the games credits and opening scene to run and you arrive at one of the best hubs these games have ever done and kick off the story. It’s not daunting in the way BB is for someone new

Thanks for all the insight; I have been looking forward to playing this game this weekend. (hopefully can beat FF16 before, I just got all eikons)
Your comment about Sekiro worries me though. I have beaten and enjoyed, Elden Ring, all three Dark Souls games, Demon Souls, Mortal Shell, Nioh 1 and Nioh 2.
I couldn't beat Sekiro because of the BS parrying.

Let me elaborate, in this game you have a stamina bar just like normal. When you block or attack it takes stamina. Normal blocks you take chip damage but this is where a rework of Bloodbournes rally comes into play. You’re health with have a sliver just like Bb if you’re fast enough you can get it back.
So why is perfect blocking the optimal strat most times? Well because it can break enemy weapons lowering their damage, it is one of if not the fastest ways to make an enemy “groggy” so think posture broken or staggered opening them up for massive damage this is almost a must for some bosses.
Finally this game doesn’t have 3 different style kanji different attacks like Sekiro. They have one glow red attack that MUST BE perfect blocked.
But as I said you can beat the game without it but you’ll struggle more. The game sets you up for success.

Why? Do you just not like the genre? Or are you just not ok someone other than FromSoft finally made one as good as theirs?

Cool, I love Souls games. Cant wait for Lords of Fallen next month

I don’t think people will find Lies of P as difficult as they may believe. I know it’s a cliche to say “Miyazaki wants you to succeed and overcome in his games” but this game truly does.
Another thing when you die and drop your currency it’s a typical run back. However if you die before then you don’t lose it all a percent or is gone every time you don’t get it back before dying. Also the currency drops in boss arenas are always immediately in your step inside the fog gate negating having to worry about picking them up and fight the boss if you died in the far corner

This.
Souls like games just don't do it for me. Hades was OK for a while, but I eventually just get bored repeating things. I have tried quite a few and I eventually just stop playing them.
I keep picking them up when they are on sale hoping one will grab me, but I always move on to something else after a few hours. Haven't bothered to try Elden Ring because I know it will just be a waste of money for me.
The closest thing to a Souls-like that I truly enjoyed and played all the way through was Deathloop, which is not a true Souls-like. The story kept me interested all the way through.

You should give Elden Ring a try. Open world and you can navigate the difficulty in different ways.
Dark Souls 3 is simply incredible.
Demon Souls may be a the best to start with

My backlog is currently a mile long, but I’ll likely check it out once it’s had some time to be fully patched and polished.
Posted on 9/18/23 at 9:35 am to Joshjrn
It’s pretty damn polished now. Idk man I just think this is a rare very special game made by people who so very clearly poured every ounce of themselves into it for years and that is reflected 1000 fold. We don’t get that often.
Posted on 9/18/23 at 9:37 am to SG_Geaux
Well if there’s every a “souls like” I think will get you it’s Lies of P. Most of which reasons for I have laid out extensively. In fact I don’t think it should be a souls like it’s just as good as anything FromSoft has made

Fair enough, but I have games just like that in my backlog, and I’m pretty sure LoP isn’t going to get worse in the next handful of months

Fair enough touché. I am just trying to raise awareness for this game as I don’t feel it is getting anywhere near the attention it deserves and should receive. But to be fair early access just ended and today is officially launch

Speaking of Elden Ring...if you have never seen an idiot before then look at me...I'm the idiot.
I've done a 2 full new build playthroughs of Elden Ring...one of which saw me do abbreviated NG+ runs (I think up to NG+3 or 4 in order to get the different endings for platinum). After spending so much time in the game I decided I was done with it until the DLC eventually comes out.
This year I've been playing a bunch of games for the first time (either new games or older ones that I hadn't gotten to yet). Mainly the lame Harry Potter game (wish I hadn't wasted my time on it but it is what it is), FF16, Cyberpunk, Jedi Survivor, TotK, etc.
Finally finished Cyberpunk last week and decided I wanted to take a break before diving into another new game (probably Baldur's gate). Instead of taking a break from games altogether I figured I'd waste some time here and there in Elden Ring with a build I hadn't tried before. Ended up starting a hybrid strength/int build...20 hours later I've completely finished all over Limgrave and part of Liurnia and am hooked again...and still getting pissed for being dumb and losing 10k runes. So much for not touching Elden Ring until the DLC and "taking a break" from games.

haha this would be me. I am waiting for the DLC.
Baldurs Gate is fantastic.

If the name is any indication, would this be the definitive souls clone for someone with a piss fetish?
Posted on 9/18/23 at 1:23 pm to CornDogCologne
If that fetish involves Timothy Shalomane taking a break from Dune to frick up some puppets…. And people

I dont think the games you listed would fit anyone's definition of Soulslike. The term is usually given to 3rd person, precision-action RPGs with high difficulty, loose storytelling, corpse runs to get your currency back, and a few other consistent elements

Hades was OK for a while
Hades is an isometric roguelike (or roguelite if you wanna get really technical)

Deathloop
I know you said it's not a true soulslike, and you're right - it couldn't be further from one

Soulslike = Nioh 1/2, Surge 1/2, Lords of Fallen, Mortal Shell, Thymesia, Steel Rising.
