Just dove into the Total War series for the first time with Rome 2

I'm absolutely addicted. It's so much more than I expected.
From what I understand, this was a middle-of-the-road installment in the series. I can't wait to play the rest of them if that's true. For the vets of the series, what's the suggested next step following my Roman conquest? I was thinking about doing Warhammer 2 next to see the differences between the historically based games and the fantasy ones. Rome 1 has also piqued my interest, as I saw a lot of reviews saying they preferred the first over the second.

The salt for this game is because of the launch in 2013 and despite numerous patches and even the free Emperor Augustus campaign expansion which positively overhauled the game, they still can't get over the 2013 issues.
I think its a great game and Attila is an amazing follow up.
I really wish there would be an Empire 2 but I have a feeling Warhammer is too dominant now for that.

Total War Saga: Troy launches as an Epic Games Store exclusive for PC on 13th August, and will be free to download and keep permanently for anyone that does so within the first 24 hours or release. After that, you'll need to acquire it the old-fashioned way, with money and such.
TW: Troy releases August 13th.

Shogun 2 is the best game in the entire series, I've played pretty much all of them since rome 1 forward

I chalked that up to me not being knowledgeable enough about the series to have an accurate depiction. Sucks the perception never really improved after all the changes they made. It's a blast to play.

How does Medieval 2 stack up?

I've been hooked on the Total War series since the original Rome came out, so I feel you on this one... :)
I've played almost all of them since then and I agree that Shogun 2 is probably the best all-around one and a lot of fun to play. I like Medieval 2, but I just ran into way too many situations where the AI would just stand in one spot doing nothing while getting plunked away with arrows and artillery. Pretty much all of the TW games have moments like this, but for some reason it seemed worse to me in M2. I've never used mods though and I've read M2 has some awesome ones (including ones that improve the AI).
Recently all I've played is Warhammer 2 though. I am not really into the Warhammer thing (although I love Blood Bowl), but when you combine the chaos of a massive Total War battle with crazy spells and units, it is absolute insane fun. Out of all of them, it has probably been the most addictive one for me.
Edit: Also to answer one of your original questions, I think Rome 1 was a lot better than 2. 2 grew on me after awhile but even now occasionally I'll go back and start a game of 1 and find myself playing it 4 hours later.

I love that series. I probably put in 100 hours on Empire. Played as the USA and invaded Europe. I just got into Warhammer 2 and its awesome so far.

It's gonna be bad. They let EGS pay them to make it exclusive and it will be free the first few days of release for anyone who claims it.

The OG Rome: Total War, with the "Total Realism" full conversion mod was the bees' knees, the wasps' nipples, every erogenous zone of every major flying insect.
Rome 2 was okay and I played it a lot, but didn't have the same reverence for it as I did the original (as modded).

After 902 hours, I can tell you that TW: Empire with DarthMod is the best game ever.

TW: Warhammer II is pretty great. Lizardmen > all others

I'm well underway in my Roman campaign, but I went ahead and pulled the trigger on both Warhammer 1 and 2 and the DLC that connects them. Kinda feeling a Wulfrik campaign.
