I bought it and played a couple hours.

It’s been fun so far.

This game will be a problem for me.

I’m a completionist and this feeds my obsession.

I’m level 9 and I haven’t left Rohlan Fields yet.

I bought chained echoes for the switch yesterday. I'm going to play it while my wife plays Hogwarts Legacy when it comes out. Played for an hour or two yesterday and really liked it.

I am Setsuna is def worth a play-through if you’re feeling the old school JRPG itch. Music is pretty much all piano instrumentals and is amazing.

Gamer confession: I've become a voice acting snob in video games. I'd love to be able to get into the Chained Echos throwback style RPGs that have been coming out over the last 5-10 years, but I don't know if I can get through no voice anymore. I'm missing out, I know

I can empathize with this. It's struggle I had when playing through the Trails in the Sky games recently.

But the game is good enough to be worth the time. I think Chained Echoes is for now. I am glad that Square Enix has invested a decent amount of cash for voice acting in their HD-2D titles (Triangle Strategy/Octopath Traveler).

I'm absolutely in love with Dragon Quest 11. It's the granddaddy gold standard of JPRGs.

Gameplay is spot on. Music is awesome. Monster design is top class. Story is great. If you want to play casual, it can do that. If you want to play hardcore, turn on Drakonian quests and it can do that.

I'm only about 20 hours in. It's my first Dragon Quest and I love it.

I’m starting it today! Not too steep a learning curve it sounds like?

I think i've scratched the surface of what Dragon Quest 11 is all about but so far it's a very easy learning curve.

I's nice to know that there is absolutely nothing in the game that can be missed.

Gonna add one almost never mentioned and one super popular series, one i personally find awful, but is just below par with FF and DQ. First, the trails of cold sky series, and second any Tales of game specifically Bersia.

Games that fit that style that I personally enjoy:

Shadowrun Returns
Shadowrun Hong Kong
Shadowrun Dragonfall
Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous

classical CRPG's akin to the old fallouts. i love em. just finished wasteland 3 last weekend. another good one for that genre.

Just coming back to this thread to say Chained Echoes was fantastic. I have a few minor quibles but for the most part everything about the game, story, graphics, music, BATTLES! was fantastic. I 100%'ed it and I'm sad that I'm done with it. Hoping they've got DLC and/or a second one planned.

I was thinking of playing this to change things up. It has to be pretty cheap to play now, right? Ps5 or the new xbox?

I’d say it’s the exact same game on PS5 and XBOX Series.

Get the definitive S edition and you’ll be good to go for at least 100 hours.

If you haven’t already, watch the Kotaku review. It will hype you up beyond belief.

I'd be interested in what your rec would be then. Chained Echoes is a no brainer for new and old fans alike of traditional, turn based jrpgs. I've been playing rpgs games since childhood, starting with the original DQ1 and FF1 on NES way back when. Chained Echoes is a fantastic jrpg game. I'd recommend that to a new player any day of the week. What I wouldn't recommend is something like Pillars of Eternity or the likes. THAT is the type of game for the "1000s of hours" club as you put it. Another great series of rpg games nonetheless, but not a traditional Jrpg.

I’m not sure how traditional this is but Trials of Mana on Switch was a lot of fun.

It has a Dragon Quest feel to it but in an action jrpg package. Art style and story are very similar to the Dragon Quest games.

It’s very beginner friendly.

I actually got pumped from video game dunkey's review. I'll watch the video you linked though!

I do enjoy his videos but his reviews for JRPGs are pretty trash. He does not like the genre at all.

Chained Echoes

i saw this on a list of highly underrated recent games so decided to play it last night.

couple of hours in and so far loving it. its been awhile since i played a real old school style jrpg (setsuna was probably last one). really hitting the spot.

Their spin on the combat system so far is pretty refreshing.
