Day 1 on Steam is interesting. Most people are celebrating that decision, not mocking it, but it's a decision for sure.
I am not mocking it.

It is hilarious due to their previous snubbing of Steam.

I am saying it says something. Namely that they don't have faith that this is going to score big on it's own, so they needed more distribution vectors than they have needed in the past.

Or that they are in deep shite, and need this one to score WAY bigger than they think it could without help.

It has been pretty eye opening considering the level of detail Ubi is known for. It’s mostly stuff that would ordinarily go overlooked. But, it’s stuff that you can’t unsee and then inevitably look for more. It’s also an entirely self inflicted snowball that makes it comedic. If this was a scripted story, nobody would believe it. Withdraw the night before your Tokyo demo of a samurai game…to reschedule release for black history month.

When they withdrew from the Tokyo show. . .the day before. . .

That was when I knew SOMETHING was up. I thought they might cancel it outright. Moving it to Black History Month was funnier.

The month where the internet releases all the crazy conspiracy theories.

Blacks were the vikings
Blacks were the British
Blacks were the Japanese
Blacks were the iIndians
Blacks were the Native Americans
Cleopatra was black
Hannibal was black
Babe Ruth was black
Abraham Lincoln was black
Moors were mainly black
All the Pharoahs were black

So why not wait until then to go with "missionary's slave was a samurai"

An internal memo from Guillemot was released, essentially what I said. I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with his appraisal of Outlaws, but this is their motivation:

quote:

First, Star Wars Outlaws’ initial sales proved softer than expected, despite solid ratings from players that recognized the game’s faithful transcription of the original trilogy’s essence and richness: 76 on Metacritic, 3.85/5 on PS store, ~4/5 on Xbox and 4.4/5 on Epic. While players praise the sense of detail and the beauty of the graphics, the effectiveness of the reputation system, and endearing characters like Nix, some also noted areas of improvement. The development teams are already hard at work on this, focusing on save issues, stealth mechanics, more frequent quest checkpoints, and better NPC AI. I’m confident that these updates will significantly improve the player experience by allowing us to deliver on its promise, and make Star Wars Outlaws a must-play game and long-term seller. In parallel, the Publishing teams and developers are closely collaborating to increase the engagement with the game and boost player acquisition during Black Friday and the holiday season.

In today’s ultra-competitive market, players expect extraordinary experiences and ultra-polished games on Day 1. We need to continue to improve when it comes to fine-tuning our games and delivering outstanding gameplay. This is what will enable Ubisoft to again create the best games in the industry.

Consequently, we decided to delay Assassin’s Creed Shadows to February 14, 2025. The game is already playable and of high quality, and has all the features the team wanted to integrate into this ambitious experience. This unusual decision at such an advanced stage is motivated by our desire to offer an optimal experience from launch on all platforms and various PC configurations, and to remove the small frictions we typically used to address in post-launch title updates. We will also use the extra time to complement the experience with a few high-impact secondary quests that will bring even more memorable moments.

But have fun with your theories.

He did briefly address the black samurai blowback:

quote:

Lastly, I’d like to address the recent polarized coverage around our creative choices. We are an entertainment company. As such, our objective is not to endorse any specific agenda. Our mission has always been to entertain players and enrich their lives with original and memorable experiences, that resonate with a global audience.

I already read that last night.

So I was aware when I typed the above.

Because the 2 things are not incompatible.

Occam's razor.

Simplest answer is usually the correct one. Ubisoft isn't the first studio to delay this late in the game for quality reasons.

No, they did not delay this game and refund every presale and offer future presales the first expansion for free for "quality reasons."

On top of the other issues with Ubisoft, absolutely. Shadows has to sell like hot cakes right out the window. Offering the first expansion free with the base game is for that reason.

For all the grief Starfield has gotten, the one thing that's true is it launched in a really good state, quality wise. Their best release in that regards, and them delaying the launch for pretty much a year was for that reason.

If you guys think they a) can "de-woke" the game in 3 months and b) are even going to bother, reality would welcome you with open arms.

Of course not. They're releasing it in February because it's black history month. It's pretty obvious.

We are both making super simplistic arguments.

I would argue I am using Occam's Razor. My argument encapsulates yours, yours excludes mine.

So mine is the better example.

Apparently UBI’s board is doing some internal investigations. Saw it on Reddit and not sure if it was mentioned.

I wouldn't doubt it. Guillemot seems shady and they've had workplace issues for a while. No telling what else is going on there.

It’s really not. There’s not a lot of trailers and videos they’ve released so far but every single one has been picked apart to point out all the graphical glitches and shitty animations they allowed in them.

I wanted to post here again earlier this month but didn’t want to bump the thread again. I recently listened to a podcast episode that I occasionally listen to called Our Fake History. The guy did a re-release of a two parter about yasuke because of the recent AC controversy. I’d encourage you to listen to it to see how problematic the Lockley guy’s book is.

He recorded short addendums to the episodes and it sounds like he, like you, misses why people have raised such an issue about yasuke in AC. He sounds like he thinks it’s because black man in my white game though never outright states it, when it’s really pandering for woke points by making him the main PC. He leaves the original episodes alone though.

Ubisoft, once a powerhouse in the gaming industry, is currently grappling with internal and external pressures that have raised questions about its management, strategic decisions, and overall direction. The company’s Executive Committee and Board of Directors recently announced an internal investigation and comprehensive review of its operations following a series of setbacks, including disappointing sales and delayed game releases. This review aims to address the growing concerns over the company’s future while identifying areas that need improvement to restore its standing among players and stakeholders.

quote:

Insider reports from current and former Ubisoft employees paint a picture of a company struggling under poor management and outdated development practices. There are claims that mismanagement has led to repeated delays, a lack of innovation, and games that often launch with critical technical issues. This has been a recurring theme with Ubisoft’s recent releases, including “Star Wars Outlaws,” which was criticized for lacking polish and failing to captivate audiences despite being part of a beloved franchise. Such shortcomings suggest deeper systemic issues within Ubisoft’s development processes.

Ubisoft’s over-reliance on its core franchises, including “Assassin’s Creed,” “Far Cry,” and “Tom Clancy’s” series, has also been identified as a major weakness. While these titles have historically been successful, the formulaic approach to their development—characterized by large open worlds, repetitive side quests, and familiar gameplay mechanics—has led to a sense of fatigue among players. This stagnation has hurt Ubisoft’s reputation, with many gamers feeling that the company has prioritized quantity over quality?

quote:

The controversies surrounding Ubisoft extend beyond financial struggles and delayed projects. The company has faced accusations of promoting certain agendas within its games, particularly with recent titles like “Star Wars Outlaws” and “Assassin’s Creed Shadows,” which feature diverse protagonists. Ubisoft has publicly denied these allegations, insisting that it creates games for the “broadest possible audience” and is not pushing any specific agenda. However, this defensive stance has done little to quell the polarized reactions from both fans and critics, adding another layer of complexity to the company’s ongoing challenges.

Ubisoft’s response to these criticisms highlights a broader industry trend where game developers are navigating the complex interplay between creative expression, market demands, and social expectations. For Ubisoft, this has meant walking a tightrope between appealing to its core audience while also attempting to broaden its reach—a balancing act that has proven difficult given the vocal nature of the gaming community.
