I am playing God of War for the first time.

No reason to avoid it, there were just always other games I wanted to play more
After beating Expedition on my Xbox, decided to fire up the PS5 and try it out
Beautiful, detail-oriented.
Very fun, but repetitive combat
Story is great in parts.
I think the worst, for me, was the heel turn by the son after finding out he was a god. It was a sharp turn. . .then Kratos was like "stop it", and Atreus was like "I am good and noble now"
seemed like some shite got cut there

Have you never played the original trilogy and just started with Sonys reboot?

Ah gotcha. I highly recommend them if you really like old school hack and slash games.
As far as Sonys reboot duology, they’re fine games on their own. Obviously made in a style that is in keeping with Sonys 1st party studio games brand image. If you are generally a fan of Sonys games I think you’ll likely enjoy it. The story’s are pretty good (mostly,) the combat can be fun but you need to play on high difficulty. I found the half baked rpg systems in the first one pretty bad but almost like everything else it is much improved in the sequel.

The original trilogy is with the God of War doing God of War things is much better than the dad Kratos era.
Don’t get me wrong the reboot is a great game on its own but it has nothing on Kratos unleashing pure wrath on Greece.

Did any of you ever play Ascension or the Origins series (Ghosts of Sparta and Chains of Olympus)?

They’re very different experiences but I do think the Greek trilogy gives a lot of emotional backing to the Norse games and what they’re trying to do
Ragnarok is a top 3 gaming letdown of my entire life. Every story choice they made was the wrong one

Another awful take. Ragnarok is every bit as good as the first one.

The original games are definitely more fun. They are just the right length too for what they are.
The new games obviously great too, they were just made in an era where "fun" often takes a backseat to other things.

Completely agree about Ragarok being a big disappointment. The pacing of it was terrible, the story got much more aggressively in way of the game play. The Atreus parts ranged were at best "meh" and occasionally just terrible. The chapter of him in that swamp was dreadful. The part with him in Midgard wasn't much better either.
Meanwhile Ragarok itself was the most overhyped event in any video game ever. Two games and 80 hours worth of build up and it was like a 15 minute minor skirmish, you fought Thor again which you had already fought and then the Odin fight was completely lame. Talk about ending on a whimper.

Maybe if you enjoy writing that’s aimed at teenagers and comic book fans. Absolutely horrid narrative work. Countless pieces of amazing setup from GOW2018 were ignored, tons of loose ends left dangling, terrible pacing, and some baffling attempts at “subversion” because that’s what every piece of media wants to try and be today

Up until the boss fights you’re just fighting the same groups of mobs you fought all game while all the cool Ragnarok shite is going in in the background as set dressing

Compare that to GOW3 where you just had epic setpiece after epic setpiece and got to play every single cool thing yourself instead of watching

I liked 2018 better, but Ragnarok was still a great game. It has a 94 metacritic with an 8.2 user score. Seems like most of that is a you problem.
My biggest issue was making Thor a beer gut redneck. Other than that, thoroughly enjoyed and will play again at some point.

Beloved franchises, Sony first party games’, and Nintendo games always get over scored, that’s nothing new. You could shite out the most by-the-book Mario or Zelda game ever and there’s a 0% chance it would get below a 90. People have similar attachment to GOW and Kratos. There has been a ton of reevaluation online over the past 2-3 years with people starting to realize that Ragnarok was pretty mid
It’s not a bad game. It's highly polished, mechanically sound (even though it has a host of issues), has great performances from the cast, has a couple of good moments. But it could’ve been a true masterpiece with all the setup it had going in. They just botched it. That’s what happens when you have Barlog writing + directing 2018 and then switch to a 15 person team of millennials. It's pretty damning that basically every fan theory I read online in the years between 2018 and Ragnarok turned out better than what we actually got.

Yeah and Odin being a sleazy mob boss and Asgard being a bunch of log cabins

I thought the first one was good and was a switch up from the originals.
But got bored with ragnorok.

They've taken creative liberties with Norse mythology and most of it has been just fine. I had no problem with Asgard, and it was evident with Odin that they decided to go with a big name regardless. He was ok. Not what I would have imagined for that character, but Schiff is really good.
SPOILER FOR RAGNAROK
I still get chills thinking of that scene when they take Tyr to the mural, and knowing who he actually is, he whispers "he lied".

Played ascension and part of ghost of Sparta but it was a rough PSP port on ps4 so I didn’t make it very far.

He’s breast. His performance was fine. The character was just written totally at odds with everything we had learned about Odin in 2018
