Horizon sequel question: not want it lost in review thread.

So I have Elden Ring pre installing and will be giving every ounce of free time I have to that the second it drops. My question is for those that have actually played Horizons sequel. As someone who thought the first game was amazing in ways of story, characters, the world, concept; and more I just never could get completely into some of the ridiculous side quest and question choices in design. Since I’m bored and have a good few days till Elden Ring would downloading and playing the sequel be fun for someone who enjoyed the first one ok as a above average open world game but not exalted as many others?

Absolutely. I'm in the same boat as you. I've played a few hours of it so far and it's really good. I loved the first one. It's actually the game the got me into gaming, well that and Witcher 3. Im gonna a play this for a week and then jump head first into elden ring. I'll then come back and finish up this and dying light 2. It's a good time to be a gamer.

Does it feel like a Witcher 3 inspired style of play? Dialogue options that matter as opposed the the original. Actual weapon variety that matters since one isn’t obviously better than the others in alll ways. Meaningful and engaging side content that goes behind clear 30 enemy camps btw you can use stealth but it’s half baked you’ll always be seen eventually. Don’t get me wrong Horizon 1 had a few supreme side quest but way too much of that games no main content was sub par. Do the skill trees actually matter now and let you tailor your playstyle instead of some being either 1) OP and necessary or 2) useless? I could go on and I know I’m being critical of a game I actually loved in many ways. I have no doubt it’s story, presentation and design, and Dino fights will wow. I just kinda got burnt out on the first one when doing anything not directly tied to the main conflicts.

The side quests are really good now. I haven’t gotten too far into the story but as far as the dialogue choices, I am not sure they really change too much of what actually happens.
Long story short, if you liked the first game you’ll probably like this one too.

God damn this game maade a GIGANTIC leap. It improves on all of its already extremely good qualities and ironed out the problems. I’m loving it so far. Very interested in where this story goes

Damn I get more and more impressed. It does follow the same slow as frick beginning to get started in earnest like the first one, although it’s masked way better in visuals cool set pieces better engaging tutorials and interesting dialogue. But man they CLEARLY took inspiration from BoTW here. This game is full stop 3x better easily than the original. I would tell everyone who chances on this ITS S MUST BUY. Think some BoTW type open world exploring, but with more intricate puzzles akin to Tomv Raider that you traverse while fighting dinos and humans all to unravel some mystery I can’t even guess at yet I’m not far enough in.
One huge disclaimer: This game gives no warning and it EXPECTS You to know all and everything that exactly happened and was revealed in the first installment and it wants this right from the jump. Honestly I’d watch an in depth YouTube video telling you what ya need to know and just play this one.

It's really good. The main story is great, as is most of the side quests I've went on. The map is huge. I'm level 16 and have explored a little over a quarter of the map.

I played almost all throughout the night that hadn’t happened to me in forever and thought it wouldn’t until Elden Ring. This game is sooooooo much better than the first one like way more than it has any right to be. It’s the best open world game without a single doubt since Witcher 3. Plays a bit heavy into the sci fi realm too much for my liking when I would’ve preferred focusing on the future of the world but damn they frickkng hit a 500 foot home run. I’m playing on ps5 and it is by far the first game worthy of the console; but my buddy and all the news and message boards say it runs perfectly fine on ps4 and ps4 pro not a cyberpunk situation.
This game will have 20x more mainstream appeal than Elden ring. It will win game of the year, assuming they don’t completely body flop the ending.

I just got to lvl 14, and I’m enjoying the game a ton. Everything just feels so much smoother than HZD, and the combat with Humans and Machines is so much better.
The story has been excellent so far, a little slow to start but I see it’s starting to pick up. I can’t wait to see where it goes from here.

Something in probably overly thrilled about they not only fixed but made it a viable play style, melee and stealth.
I also ducking love the new traverse mechanics. It isn’t quite as far out there as breath the Wild, but you can see the inspiration shine through but everywhere. I’d add other game’s like ghost of Tsushima, uncharted, and Tomb raider all influenced the he world and how you move about it. The result is fascinating. It’s beautiful, it’s n out uncharted mind turn off theatrics, they have some pieces like that but usually accommodated by gorgeous vistas or a nice voice over or nature sound. There’s intricate climbing puzzles involving tools you have to find and use. This is really the culmination of all those past game’s atttempte brought to near as perfect as we can get

Like that they've expanded on the melee part. It's been a challenge to get better at that part. So used to just spamming bows and slings from the past game. Really focuses on learning what weapons work best. I just got to No Man's Land and have put a ton of time in. Side stuff is very fun.

Also so happy and impressed they complete overhauled the weapon types system and subset among them. In OG one was always clearly best gave no reason to experiment or care.

The gameplay and side content is much better overall. The main story is a lot weaker though.
I am probably only around 50% of the way through the game, but from what I can tell, the structure is very much "scour the map to find the 4 elements" type setup just to give players reason to cut loose in its giant world, but it seems to do a good enough job of masking that.
I'm just not really sure I care a lot about the politics of the red colored indian people vs the blue colored indian people which at times it feels like this game devolves into.
It lacks the sense of mystery and wonder that was present in the first game because you already know exactly what happened to the world and why things are the way they are.

You think so? From what I've played of it, I think it's easily as good, if not better. I don't know how it ends, but so far, I'm loving the story.

What’s everyone’s favorite weapons/ techniques and valor surge combos? I like braces and triple shot with ranged master which I made sure to fully upgrade early. This games insanely good.

Is it recommended to go ahead and play the first Horizon game before getting into the sequel?
I'm still in my first playthrough of all the Souls games, so I may not get to the Horizon series any time soon. Finished Demons Souls and Dark Souls 1. Started Bloodborne this week (poor choice consideringi I have Elden Ring ready for pre-download) and still need to do DS 2 and 3 and Sekiro.
Also looking forward to the two DC comics games.
All that to say...my recent gaming renaissance at age 36 has created a huge instant backlog and I need to find the time for the Horizon series. It'll be tough to avoid temptation and dig right into the PS5 sequel game but if the recommendations are strong enough to suggest that I need to play the first game, then I'll do so (at some point lol)

First game is a must play imo. I haven’t started this yet, but played the original last year. It was one of the great games of last gen.

I’ve had the first one downloaded for almost a year and haven’t touched it. This thread has convinced me to dive into it this weekend because I really want to play the new one, it looks awesome
