Geoff Keighley tweet:

Half-Life launched 20 years ago today. I haven't always made the right choices in life, but being around Gabe Newell and the team for those magic final hours 1998 is a highlight of my career. Crazy to think I was a sophomore in university back then. Thank you Valve.

Embarrassed to say the first time I played this was the PS2 port.

You can almost see his brain churning, "there's no fricking way I'm making a 3rd one of these".

I don't think I ever beat it without a cheat. That last section was just too much for me at the time.

Still go back and play HL3 from time to time.

The first Half Life is like Shakespeare. I can appreciate the contributions it made to it's entertainment medium, but so much has been taken from it at this point that playing it for the first time feels extremely derivative.

Yes mechanics are found everywhere in gaming today but the experience of fighting your way to the surface out of Black Mesa is very much unique.

HL1 = The Mist
HL2 = 1984

I love the common thread of hopelessness in the series. The sense of whatever you have done or will ever do means nothing. The game is extremely dark in it's portrayal of despair.

Having a crowbar as your melee weapon, and practically your only weapon, was revolutionary back then.

My favorite part of HL1 was when the Black Mesa shock troop guys came repelling in to hunt you down. Awesome stuff.

But no doubt that HL2 was the true masterpiece.

Same with Metal Gear Solid and Zelda 64. What a year for gaming.

That looks nothing like HL1.
