The first RE games on the original PS were sort of the first mainstream horror games most people played, including myself.

It's definitely been an under served genre the past decade.

I'm def. going to get the RE2 remake coming out in January I believe.

Original Doom. Primarily because it was one of the first FPS and it felt like you were in the game. Even more so than Wolfenstein. Also the sounds of the demons/monsters were pretty unnerving back then. Jumped quite a few times playing that back in the day.

The original Dead Space would frick with me so much that I literally could not play it longer than 1-2 hours at a time. It would stress me out too damned much

The Evil Within. Between the Hospital areas and then the bosses on each level, this game gave me the creeps playing it bad.

Eternal Darkness on the GameCube when I first played it. Resident Evil 2 when it first came out. Dead Space.

In ocarina of time, those weird zombies that made those loud screech noises which would make Link freeze....that stuff was weird.

Dying Light had some fun times in it as well.

Alan Wake was a very heart racing game for me.

Dead Space is the best one I have played.

The first one combined the slow pace of the original REs with brilliant sound and an absolutely horrifying enemy.

I remember one moment in the game where an enemy sneaks up behind you from an air duct and just follows you until you turn around and see him.

I was checking behind myself in real life while playing.

Eternal Darkness

I'm a chicken when it comes to scary games but this is one I absolutely loved and got all three endings. The insanity mechanic was good fun.

Dead Space was incredibly scary. Nothing worse to be wandering in a room when it suddenly goes on lockdown, the lights go dark and red, and you have to perfectly aim that little gun to kill the necro-whatever monster. Immediate, full-body sympathetic reaction.

Eternal Darkness was one of the first games that I'm aware of to have this sort of sanity system and it's a great idea, but I don't think I ever got to fully appreciate it.

There was a spell in the game you could cast to raise your sanity meter and you seemed to be able to cast it very liberally, I think your magic auto-refilled or something, I forget. Only played through the game once.

I remember it feeling cheap and like it was causing me to miss out on the whole point of the game, which was not knowing wtf was going on thanks to all the insanity stuff.

I thought it was solely certain monsters would steal your sanity just by look, and you could get it back if you killed them quickly enough. Not sure about the spells. There were 3 colors, red, blue, and green (maybe), and each one was strong against one and weak against another.

My favorite memory is playing this with my gf at the time, and she had her own save file, I was pretty far along. She went to save and on the save screen it showed all the save files being deleted. I panicked, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" She stared wide-eyed at the screen, almost weepy, then it did that "back to reality" flash. I laughed so hard, she didn't think it was funny, threw the controller at me, and left the room.

Totally worth it.

This happened to me and I quickly turned the game off. Also the volume would go up and down in the game. Pretty great.

I remember the screen flipping upside when you would enter a room.

Also the controls inverting (left is now right, up now down, etc.)

I can't think of anything more fun as a game developer than building in trolling as part of the normal gameplay.
