Serious question, why not just use an emulator?

I used to have a Dreamcast sd card reader that I could plug in the serial port of the dc but it went missing when I moved. It really sucks because Nintendo took down the site that had all the games formatted for as cards. Anyone know where I can find another source?

What you are looking for are called SDISOs. I never used them myself because the serial port based SD card devices run way too slow. Pretty much everyone uses the GDEMU nowadays since clones are so cheap and common and work perfectly. So, you'll likely have a difficult time finding them. Do yourself a favor and get a clone GDEMU :-)

Yeah, the BeharBros stuff is pretty good but they have had problems with really fragile cables in the past. They actually gave me a Toro for free because of the schematic I mentioned earlier was floating around the internet -- not that they used my schematic, but he just wanted someone to test it who was familiar with that kind of setup. I used it once and put it in a drawer, and like 2 years later I ended up hooking it up for something and the colors were all fricked up from the fragile cable even though it sat in the drawer all that time Supposedly, though, I have heard they have fixed this and will send you a replacement new style cable.

Geez. I may have a newer version or something. I bought it last year. I haven't had an issue with the cable even though it is bending. Will be happy though when I can replace it with the component cables. It for sure gets the job done, although I hear the brightness is out of spec but that doesn't bother me.

Well, I do hate those SCART connectors. It's a crappy standard.

I am really thinking about getting a gscartw myself though. I have my 20" Ikegami CRT on a rolling cart and I would like to stick all my retro consoles on the cart plugged into a power strip and gscartw. That way I can have a beanbag chair or something in my spare bedroom where I can go and chill and play retro games, or I can roll the cart into the living room and connect the daisy-chain output to the Framemeister and play anything on the big screen.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of scart, lol. But hey, magic happens coming through those cables.

That would be a really cool setup idea. I'd love to get the gscartsw too. I wish they had a cheaper version with not as many ports and only 1 output.

Well, I guess I can't blame you for steering clear of Retro Access after dealing with that. I'm not too surprised though as I've heard people say she takes a long time before she gets back to emails.

My issue with Retro Gaming Cables UK was I ordered a couple SCART cables and one didn't work. When I opened it up, some of the wires came loose and were obviously very poorly soldered. I didn't bother contacting customer service though, and just fixed it myself with my soldering iron (shipping a cable overseas is not something I felt like bothering with). However, this was in like 2012 or 2013 and so many people order from them without a problem, so I would assume they've cleaned up their act.

Yeah, it was really bad service. At first all I wanted to do was just an exchange for the cable instead of getting a refund like she asked if I wanted. I asked her if it was possible instead of a refund and if she replied it wasn't, I was going to take the refund. Eventually, I just got really frustrated with the crappy communication and I wanted my money back at that point and no exchange. I had already went ahead and ordered the same cable from RGC since she wasn't responding. Eventually, she did give me my money back but nobody should have to contact you 4-5 times and take you nearly 3 months to respond. And only respond when the person has to use a social media account to contact you yet again. Definitely have no plans buying from her again.

As far as Retro Gaming Cables goes, so far so good as far as the quality goes. Haven't had any issues. I think I've bought a total of 4 cables from them now. And the quick response to my only email to them is a good sign that they have good communication.

I spare no expense with Dreamcast. I really need to get some kind of shelving/display case for my Dreamcast stuff, because I have lots of rare and awesome Dreamcast stuff that warrants display. Stuff like boxed obscure Japanese peripherals, development/prototype game discs, etc.

Sounds like it

Dang, sounds like a hell of a collection. Dreamcast will always remain a special console to me. I don't think I've ever gotten the same feeling for a console release as I got with the Dreamcast. Popping in Sonic Adventure (and seeing Emerald Coast) and NFL 2K for the first time was just a mind blowing experience.

I don't. I wouldn't be able to anyways since I use a PS1 slim model. Looks very interesting though.

I just like using real hardware/real carts. Also no input lag (or at least in FM case little lag) other than what your tv has. It's also always amazing just seeing these 20-30+ year old consoles outputting such beautiful images.

I have a pretty decent switch that has worked pretty well for me, but I might have just gotten lucky. I paid way less for it than what gscartsws go for! Scart is amazing, once you finally get the right cables and such. I've used the UK company and the weird person (I think that is female) on ebay that My Life In Gaming USED to recommend. No idea if the ebay one still exists as this was many years ago. I have no complaints on any except for the Genesis one that I got from the UK, picture is all shifted on that one for some reason.

I don't really do commissioned work anymore.

Booooooo!

The GDEMU doesn't need any soldering and requires you only to take the lid off your Dreamcast -- it's extremely easy, impossible to mess up.

This is good to know. And you're right, there are some pretty inexpensive options on ebay. I've had my share of Chinese everdrives, so I know all about the lack of being able to update firmware...but, that has never been a problem.

As for your Dreamcast --

Does it turn on at all? No lights, no fan spinning?

Pretty sure it doesn't turn on at all, nothing whatsoever. I'll look into and see what I can figure out, thanks for the tips!

Eh i want my Dreamcast to still be able to run discs. I used to use the dreamshell to run fighting games and it ran fine. Isozone used to have a huge catalogue of sdisos but Nintendo took them out.

I think that's right. Someone on YouTube said the weirdest thing was the fact that it's dead silent when you're so use to hearing the disc and fan spinning.

Accuracy and input lag. Not a big deal though unless you speedrun.

There's just something about using original hardware on a CRT or PVM too.

It's always great to talk to people who also enjoy doing this stuff. This is a very niche market. Emulation is so easy, but there's nothing like playing on the real thing. Especially if you already have all these systems. I started collecting around, I want to say, 2001'ish. Bought most of my consoles that I didn't already have anywhere from 2001-2004'ish so everything was much cheaper than it is now. It's crazy how things have gotten ridiculously expensive now.

What kind of switch do you use? I chose one of the ones listed on RetroRGB's site, but it was not good. Picture gets darker and it loses its sharpness so I used it for a day and then put it up. I didn't bother sending it back since I ordered it from Amazon Spain or Italy. One of them.

The lady that used to be on ebay, that is Retro Access that I had a terrible experience with. She has that site now where she sells her cables.

Damn straight. I only use a PSX and not a PS One or PS2 (slim isn't even native) to play PS1 games. Got me a Trinitron CRT still.

If you still want your DC to have a disc drive then you should get an IDE or CompactFlash connector installed. This requires soldering but adds a connector for an IDE hard drive (which you can use a SATA adapter for) or a CompactFlash card. This still doesn't give you 100% compatibility like a GDEMU, but it gives you very very high compatibility with Dreamshell and you can keep the normal GD-ROM drive.

This is just installing a connector, no full PCB with any kind of expensive components, so it's pretty much only the price of labor to get this done.

Well, just a moment after I posted this, I looked on Twitter and Retro Access had a big announcement -- they are having marital problems and asking for some time to catch up on orders.... because the husband in the marriage is now a trans woman

My Trinitron has geometry issues

I use PSOne due to the size. I don't really have the room to fit the full size PS1 with my other systems I have hooked up, otherwise I'd be using it since that's all I ever used back in the day.

I actually saw that yesterday too. I was looking on RGC's twitter to see if they had any news on the Dreamcast component cable and saw they had some deals.

This is where I found out. I clicked on this tweeted deal: https://twitter.com/retro_cables/status/1179707015867830272

Bandridge SVB7725 5 Way SCART Selector Switch. Seems to be something that doesn't come up a lot, but they are definitely out there. It might actually suck, but it seems fine to me

That sounds about right. She seems to be all about the personalized stuff for people, as I remember there would be ebay listings for certain people (which I found to be really odd). No idea if she's all about that now, but that was some weird shite a few years back.

Emulation is still great in a pinch. I've got WAAAAAAAAY more stuff than I'll ever play on a PSP. The PSP is so underrated with all the things that it is capable of The Vita may be able to do all of that and more, but I've never had a Vita....

Never modded, but I've played games from a thumb drive. It's not perfect, as they say that it will eventually screw up at some point. What are you trying to do exactly?

I picked one up when they went to $19.99, figured it would be worth a shot for that price.
