I get mad when people say Mass Effect

Me too. That's like saying the original Star Wars trilogy sucked. It's just a wrong opinion.

I think there's a big difference between overrated and "I just don't like it". I acknowledge that my opinion on the Smash Bros. franchise runs with the minority. It's obviously a widely successful game and people enjoy the crap out of it. I just never liked it from day one. Too much chaos, hard to keep up with what's going on, and just seemed like button mashing.

Far Cry 3 was a hot piece of garbage but was hyped to holy hell.
I guess I will also say Titanfall. Wasn't necessarily a bad game, but man was it over-hyped.

Disagree on Far Cry 3. Really liked it, but I would agree that the love it got was a bit much.

It was enjoyable. Didn't really pay attention to the pre-release hype it got, but my then roommate claimed it was open world game we had been looking for. Wasn't exactly that, but it controls great, hunting is fun, and it's very satisfying taking a stronghold from the bandits/rebels or whatever they are called.
The trust fund protagonists were hard to take. The entire time I'm playing, over and over in my head I'm saying "spoiled little shits".

Anything Bioware post-KOTOR falls into this category for me.

Halo. I could never get into it.

assassin's creed games - the clunkiness of the platforming elements (90% of the game), the unclear and uninteresting stories, and the lack of variety in the open world made me wonder why so many people loved them as much as they did...
they're solid time wasters, but they've made 50 of them it seems.
GTAIV - my least favorite of the series. So much unrealized potential, so boring.

I agree that smash bros should be on the list. I loved fighting games at the time, and Nintendo, still found it boring. I will add another less popular opinion, world of Warcraft. It never compelled me or held my attention like eq. Everything was so gift wrapped and required so much less help or communication. I think both of these excelled for the reasons I think they were overrated.

Everyone was ejaculating over Titanfall. The beta came out and the hype died (for the most part). I played the beta (on Xbox One) for one day. It was cool at first until I realized it was just another typical CoD like game. We need more games that actually require tactics.
OFP, ArmA, etc.
BF4 was pretty cool. It was somewhere in between arcade and tactical, open world.
