Good morning. My son has been wanting his first gaming desktop for a while now and sent us this one last night. He wants it bad. He says its very easy to change out/upgrade parts on this model if needed down the road.

He's currently a sophomore in HS. Is this a good deal? Is this a good gaming desktop for him to start with?

ASUS ROG Gaming Desktop

Thanks

i'd spend the extra money for a better CPU and GPU combo that way you don't have to worry about upgrading...

Try this... 5800x / 3060 ti - $600 off

Or this... 5600x / 3070 - $520 off

another thing to note, those PCs should last him through senior year well into college if he takes care of it and lays off the pr0n.

What's your budget? There are better deals on amazon (if you don't care about getting your PC shipped to you). I'll post some links here when I know your budget.

Edit: Nevermind. Finch's links are some pretty good deals, better than anything I currently can see on Amazon.

This would be an impressive feat to accomplish

If you’re comfortable building, now is a really good time for it at the budget you’re eyeing. We can help with a parts list if so.

never built one before but my son is interested in it. I wouldn't have a clue how to do it.

I'd say about $700-$800

does he already have a monitor(s)? because that will eat into it as well.

i should also add that you won't even be able to upgrade for the price difference between the two i linked and the one your son sent you so it's worth thinking about spending the "extra".

Tons of tutorials on YouTube, and we can walk you through it. Making the parts list is the hard part. Building is silly easy.

He has one that will work for now. Will prob get a new one for christmas. I'm keeping that cost seperate than the $700-$800 budget.

Thank you. That's the kind of info i'm looking for.

Great info, thank you. So do you think we could build one similar to the links posted above for close to the $700-800 budget?

Before we go apples to apples, let’s talk about a few things, and you might have to check with your son: which games does he play? Competitively at low settings and resolution or more eye candy with higher settings or resolution?

If you have an unlimited budget, creating a parts list is easy. You have a somewhat constricted budget, so trade offs will need to be made. We’ll need your help to figure out where those can be made, and which should be avoided.

As others have said, spending some more upfront can save money in the longterm (and annoyance). Obviously this can get wild if you try to get top of the line in everything, so don't have to get carried away.
Also not a fan of prebuilts due to issues that are quite common with them. Some of my friends have been dealing with the headaches that come with that recently. Basically just mistakes in the assembly of the prebuilt.

You can pretty much youtube it, not even joking. I built one a few years back, having absolutely no knowledge of how to do it or really what all went into it. A little research on the front end and then just followed one of the million tutorial videos on youtube. It really wasn't very difficult at all.

Would be a fun project for the two of you for sure and can be a much better bang for your buck option.

id second this. the extra money spent vs the one you son wants would pay for itself in longevity and practical use.

Lower graphics smaller games.
Kerbal Space Program
Terratech
Minecraft
Cities Skylines

That’s about it. He also has an Xbox Series X that he uses for anything big/higher graphics.

he'll forget about that thing once he realizes what he's missing with it compared to PC. especially if you get one with an nvidia 3000 series graphics card.

field of view angles
higher frame rates
faster load times
way better graphics
Discord usability
cross-play between other PCs and consoles

you're gonna create what we like to call a "PC Master Race" member.
