Epic Games has revealed a new set of tools to give Fortnite content creators even more power. The new tools are called the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), and they aim to bring some of the power of the full Unreal Engine 5 into Fortnite, making them a little more approachable, while also allowing entirely new creations and games to be developed inside of Fortnite. The UEFN tools were announced and debuted during Epic’s “State of Unreal” presentation at the Game Developers Conference 2023.

Unreal Editor for Fortnite is for experienced game developers, but it’s also designed to be a user-friendly tool for Fortnite’s many Island creators and hobbyists. Eventually, the goal is to have every single one of Unreal Engine 5’s features available in UEFN. This includes assets and eventually Meta Humans as well. UEFN will also work on any platform that can play Fortnite, allowing creators to collaborate with each other across consoles and PC.

The editor itself is designed specifically to import all kinds of content and assets from the Unreal engine, but also to provide players with a lot of base game systems to work on top of. During the GDC presentation, Epic showed off footage from some of the projects that have been built using UEFN, including one that featured a full cinematic before smoothly transitioning to third-person shooter gameplay in an environment that looked nothing like Fortnite — except for the characters and the shooting.

The tool features landscape editing abilities similar to the ones that Epic developers use to make Fortnite maps. Creators can also instantly switch to an in-game mode to play their creations right away. Epic is even including a custom programming language called Verse, which should allow creators to fine-tune parts of their new game with Unreal Editor for Fortnite.

During the GDC presentation, Epic also revealed that the current crop of Island Creators helps generate a significant amount of revenue for Fortnite, as players who engage with Custom Islands are more likely to spend money in Fortnite’s in-game store.

To help reflect this fact, and the fact that UEFN will allow for far more types of creations inside of Fortnite, Epic is going to be sharing 40% of Fortnite revenue with creators who make content for the game, with larger shares for those creators whose work garners more players’ interest and engagement. This new revenue-sharing model starts today and will be backdated to the beginning of March for eligible creators. Epic hopes that this will help spur on creators to work in UEFN and eventually entire studios to create games inside that ecosystem.

The game already runs ridiculously well and they keep it tightly up to date

Idk if it's the plan with this release but making a leap in graphics would make it an even bigger juggernaut

I started playing fortnite for the first time a couple months ago, been hooked ever since. Can see what all the hype was about.

Watched a few older youtube videos about it and it's improved quite a bit. This UE5 editor is another big step forward. There's lots of people counting down the hours until someone recreates the season 1 map.

I haven’t played in about a year. This would pull me back in for a while. Looks awesome.

I picked on my daughter for playing FN a couple years ago, and now I play it more than she does.

I used to be the biggest Fortnite hater because I thought it was for children and people that sucked at shooters

Then they came out with zero build. Man was I wrong

Epic needs to get credit for how smooth and bug-less it is. The collabs for skins are awesome too.

Same here man, the graphics and the perceived player demographic was a major turn off for me. Kinda glad I’m just now playing though after reading complaints about past iterations of the game. My only regret is I missed out on some great skins.

Chapter 1 map has now been recreated using the UE5 creator LINK

UE5 is going to be a game changer, and being able to use it in creative 2.0 is gonna make the possibilities endless. I played some of the domination map yesterday, and it was like you weren't even playing fortnite.

I've been playing since 2018, and it's the only game that I still enjoy everytime I boot it up. I played some no builds last night, and the graphics just look incredible right now with UE5.

The FOMO hits me hard frequently.

I’m just glad I’ve been able to get most of my favorite characters (Master Chief, Vader, Venom, Piccolo)

Crazy to basically be playing a different game inside of Fortnite. Here’s 12 of the new map’s LINK

The pirate themed map looks cool

<—— jealous

Only skins I have are from maxing out last seasons game pass in the little bit of time remaining when I first started playing. Hoping they bring back Vader for their upcoming Star Wars collab.

That's what sucked me back in and I'm glad it did.

I was decent at building on controller, but you stand no chance when some 12-year-old that got a gaming PC so their parents don't have to deal with them has all their keybinds and can just build to a win. Now with no-builds, it's more just a creative FPS and I'm in now.

Their creativity, adding and removing things each week just keeps the game fresh and now this creative is going to add a whole new realm to the game

I stopped playing very early on when I wasn't fast enough at throwing together a tower. I take it "no-build" is just what it sounds like? As in no building?

Yep. Same map, same weapons as the build mode, just no building. I echo what others have said in this thread, it's a great game mode and you don't have to deal with sweaty 12 year olds who build the eiffel tower and shoot you before you've placed 4 walls Bonus is not having to spend half the game farming for materials...

I get irrationally pissed when I’ve got the jump on someone and in 3.5 seconds they’re hiding in some 12 level impromptu fort

Lol I would always just build a ramp like piece and that was about it. Absolutely hated the building aspect which is why I never played. This however looks awesome
