I may start it after I finish IX, but won't grab it day one.

Hopefully the plat trophy will be easier than FFIX. I don't think VIII has any time restricted weapons like Excalibur 2.

cant wait. I'm replaying VII on PS4 right now. Will play VIII after and then finally get through IX

I have only ever played VII and XV....I loved both.
Would a remaster of the others likely draw me in?

If you liked those two, VIII would be worth a play. Some dislike it, but I've always liked it. The card game is much better compared to IX.
The draw system is strange/busted, but there are fun ways to use it and get really powerful.

Hopefully you can skip GF animations.

Hopefully.
Also, I hope the speed up toggle is like the FF7 remaster. I'm being picky, but I hated having to pause FF9 to choose the speed up option.

7 is overrated
8 is great.
9 is average, at best.

But then you can't button mash square for attack boost.

The remaster just looks like high res character models. What about the backgrounds? Did they figure out a way to upscale them so that they don't look horrible?

If they are like the other remasters than no the background will not be upscaled

Can't do much with those prerendered backgrounds unfortunately. Hopefully something like the Remako Mod will come along for 8 and 9.

I always thought FFVIII was a solid entry that got pushed off in the corner.
My two main criticisms of it being the draw system and the fact that the story becomes super weird after disc 1. I kinda subscribe to the “squall is dead” fan theory to explain away some of the weirdness. I still like some of the set pieces and plot elements, but it gets pretty silly at points.

I’ve played all of them and VIII has always been my favorite. I finished IX a couple months ago and it climbed pretty high on my list, really enjoyed it.
That being said I’ve never been big on re-plays. Once I beat a game, no matter how good it is, I’m burnt out on it and I have no interest in beating it again. Even the GOAT Witcher 3

This. Disc 1 of FF8 is one of the GOAT. It sets up the story well, great custscenes, music, everything comes together nicely. Even the time travel elements introduced early on fit in and kind of add to the mystery.
Then Disc 2 and especially 3 happen, and everything plot-wise gets turned completely upside down and on its head.
Still very solid and one of their forgotten masterpieces.

I know "remaster" is kind of a catch all term, but the old FF games released on PC/console were basically straight ports rendered in higher resolution with a smoothing filter applied over the backgrounds.
Yes I know there are cheats and fast forward, but I don't really see that as being indicative of a "remaster."

I’ve played VIII to completion about once a year since 2002. It’s my favorite FF by far. Very excited for this!
If they remaster the soundtrack and throw in a few extra bosses somehow, I’d play it annually until death.

I've played all but I And II.
In order, my favorites are, VIII, X, XII, IX and then XV.
Wish this would have been a full remake like they're doing with VII, but a remaster reboot will still be nice. Time to dust off the old strategy guide, which I still somehow possess
