i think it was fantastic with 1-2 party members, the 3rd just made things a little too chaotic for me. but i really dug the rhythm of switching around, triggering skills/spells, etc..
but at times it def didnt feel very precise when there was alot going on, especially when you lost sight of an enemy and had no idea what attacks were coming. alot of times id see my dudes ko'd or getting hammered and had no idea what happened. that was kinda frustrating.
there are also a couple encounters with very obvious sections where you are supposed to avoid attacks but can only move the one character to safety.
but the 1v1 duels were some of the best moments of the game to me.

Question for everybody out there: does anyone else just find the battle system.... clunky? I want to like the game, and I do enjoy it for the most part. But man, here I am near the end of the game, and still don’t feel like I have a grasp of how to dominate in battle.
Compare this woth a game like God of War that I jjst played through. God of War could be very difficult, but never did I find it unfair or clunky. Often in FF7R I just dont really see any way to take control of the boss fights. It is basically survive, heal and revive a bunch of times, and whittle the bosses away. Which is annoying as hell.
it was fine for me early on, but it started to show its arse in the latter half.
- enter a battle with the wrong materia junctioned to Elemental and you may as well just load the checkpoint and reslot. otherwise, you're probably subjecting yourself to a long, miserable fight
- dodging is bad. barely covers any ground and has no I-frames
- frustrating when you build stagger gauge and when you max it out, boss just goes to new phase and the gauge is reset
- majority of the abilities are worthless. too slow and easy to interrupt. it's become a meme, but triple slash really is GOAT
- AI is worthless. they barely build any ATB, they dont use ATB when they have it, they mostly just stand around and guard, etc. There should've been some kind of system where you're able to dictate the logic and actions of the AI. give them permission to use ATB, be passive or aggressive, focus on attacking vs support, magic vs physical attacks, etc.
- the AI locking onto the player-controller character feels clunky and ill-conceived. you can abuse the enemy AI if you just make them play tag with character switching (I shite on the Behemoth with this strat)
- blizzard spell is bad and completely useless against most monsters (they move way too fast) so you're basically restricted to using it in pressure/stagger scenarios. doesn't have near the versatility as fire or thunder
- camera can be absolutely atrocious
- constant materia swapping in Ch17 was AWFUL
Tifa was by far the most fun to play with. She has the responsive control, builds ATB quickly, has variety, her abilities are good, and it's an utter blast to just annihilate a staggered enemy with a chain of her triangle attacks and send stagger damage to 300%+

This shite right here is spot on and the most annoying thing to me. Noticed it even back on the demo.

Haste + Starshower = can't be interrupted and would have to be nerfed if it were multiplayer.
She is also how you hit the 200% stagger needed for Leviathan. (Unbridled Strength x3, then spam triangle during stagger during Fat Chocobo fight)

yeah i think my highest stagger bonus I hit was like 365%, it was glorious. she is really fun to play, complete opposite of Aerith

I wonder how they'll do "Final Heaven" in part 2.
Anyone else want to hear Rob Clotworthy (James Raynor) voicing Cid and either Steve Blum or Mark Hamill voicing Vincent in part 2? (I have no clue what an appropriate voice for Yuffie is - heavy Japanese accent or bratty teenager)

The best way to get a Gold Chocobo in the original is beat Ruby Weapon. It drops a Desert Rose, which can be traded to an old man in Kalm for a Gold Chocobo. No breeding bs necessary.

That's true...except to even reach Ruby Weapon, you need A GOLD CHOCOBO.

Naw, you can slam the Highwind right into him.

Blocking is better than dodging, also switching from punisher to operator and visa versa gives you a nice big i-frame window

yeah, some variation of the Gambit system from XII would be amazing, and let you focus on one character. could even still let you swap on the fly too.

Yeah, it's very clunky. It's a nice concept, but the execution is poor.
My biggest complaint is with the lock-on feature. You can't move your camera and be locked on at the same time, since the right stick just switches focus to another enemy, or in some instances, another body part. Then when you turn it off, sometimes if there are enemies that are very close to each other, you may hit the wrong enemy since they are so close together. This latter case especially happens with the ranged characters.
I think the roll is also really bad besides when an enemy uses a small magic attack like fira.
Also, fire and thunder spells are so much better than wind and blizzard in this game. Why the hell do the wind and blizzard spells take so long to hit the enemies while fire and thunder hit instantaneously? I guess wind and blizzard have a bigger AOE but I am not sure that's true. It's such bs, especially when you need them for flying enemies.

First thing you should have done was to change your lock on settings. There is one that allows you to move the camera while locked on. Although it can get clunky as well.
And I have no problems with roll. It isn’t supposed to be an action game. What they have is too much for me.

I finished it last night. Pissed that I missed one music track in the entire game. I really enjoyed the experience. Perfect? No. But this was fun and I can't wait for the next installment(s).

Just realize this isn't a hack and slash game and only use dodging for positioning. Keep switching, increasing atb and spamming abilities.
Also barrier, atb up, and pray are the best materias in the game
Eventually the combat and the way they want you to fight will click with you and the difficulty will fall off a cliff. I don't think I had to restart once after the wall market chapter
