On to chapter 14 side quest. The problem is....story has been so damn good and there is a real urge to get to the end to see it play out. Not a rush to beat it because it’s dragging out just a rush because of the excitement.

The game has really brought the characters to life. Haven’t had this type of player connection since X.

I want to say more but ima just hold off until I beat it.

Chapter 17 was in my opinion by far the worst chapter in the entire game.

yep, easily top 3 worst for me. went on and on and on and on

even more jarring because 16 was one of the best, if not the best

I can see how people with a real emotional attachment to the original are pissed off.

i have no emotional attachment to the original (played it for the first time in my 20s). I didn't like Ch18 bc it was just bad . Like a little kid was telling me a story and then just went all out on the absurdity at the end

I'm watching a lot of it on Twitch and Youtube and I'm sorta taken aback by how bad I think the voice acting is in a lot of places. Some characters are better and worse than others. Like Aerith is pretty terrible IMO. In general I find most of the female characters to be pretty cringe. The dialog and the delivery.

Iffy voice acting has always been a thing in video games and I can overlook it, but we've sorta entered a new era of top notch voice acting, it's hard to play a game like God of War or the Last of Us and not sorta cringe when you hear FF7's voice acting.

Maybe a lot of it is cultural lost in translation stuff. It's a Japanese game made by a Japanese company, whereas those other games I listed were made by Americans so that's probably part of it.

i didnt think it was too bad save for some side stuff, but i think it has more to do with voice direction than anything. with GOW and LOU, you have the game directors coaching the VAs on exactly how it should be delivered. Druckmann will make you do 50 takes until you get it right.

with FF, the directors are japs so you have to hope that some american suit over here can properly convey what the VAs need to be doing. i doubt the VAs are subjected to as much scrutiny or direction

Aerith was the worst of the girls, I think Jessie was great and Tifa was really good for the majority.

Well, expect it with Nomura directing the games. After playing pretty much every Kingdom Hearts game under the sun, the whole alternate timeline thing and the end of the game just reeks of KH. Not to mention the Whispers.

Not that I necessarily have a problem with them, but they make little sense unless you yourself do the digging, which is part of my issues with Nomura as a director. The story is NEVER coherent with him lol.

I'm of the same opinion as you about the voice acting, Carson. Aerith was def my least favorite VA of the bunch. Erica Lindbeck was about as good as a choice they could've made for Jessie. She nailed that role. The sidequest voice acting was pretty cringey, but that's not surprising after playing 15. It was the same there too. I gen

I would have much preferred Alex Organ to have voiced Sephiroth over Tyler Hoechlin, but I guess he did a good enough job.

So when you voice over a Japanese game you literally have to squeeze in your line in the same amount of time it is said in Japanese. It is not easy. Unlike in GoW or TLoU is all English it is much easier to convay the voice.

Right, exactly. I think they did about as good of a job as they could have with this game.

I agree. Aerith was a little meh at first but I have gotten used to her. Wedge has probably been the worst. I like the voice but the deleivery just isn’t there most of the time.

Yeah I suspect that the Japanese voices and dialog sound a lot better to Japanese ears.

I thought Tifa was ok, it's really just Aerith that I thought was consistently bad.

It’s 100x better than the VA was in XV at launch.

they really shot their wad way too early. i mean, how much more grand and epic can they get than those last fights? it will be hard, and will undoubtedly lead to some over-complicating of things to add more twists and keep upping the ante, which will get old fast, imo.

Aerith got on my nerves a little bit I'll admit. But Tifa was right on in my opinion.

Probably so. That was classic Nomura flexing his KH muscles. KH games kinda have the same issue you are talking about, although they weren't one game split into different parts like FF7R. Whether the final battle(s) in the next game(s) are grandiose is one thing, but I just hope they expand upon the rest of Gaia similarly to 15 I guess, minus the stupid car thing. Traveling around the Highwind in HD on next gen consoles is going to be badass.

As long as we don't have to spend hundreds of hours breeding chocobos or doing archaeological digs.

Eh, but the best part about XV was exploring the different dungeons during post game. Made me appreciate the world much more, although I agree with it being a little bit more on the dead side. I just meant have it in that mold but more lively and filled with shite other than fetch quests.

I played through the original FF7 the first time in basically 20 years ago and yes, the chocobo breeding was absolute tedium. It's intentionally explained vaguely and the worst part was that you had to rank them all up by winning 9 races with each of them to breed them properly so you gotta do the same stupid arse race about 30 times.

Question for everybody out there: does anyone else just find the battle system.... clunky? I want to like the game, and I do enjoy it for the most part. But man, here I am near the end of the game, and still don’t feel like I have a grasp of how to dominate in battle.

Compare this woth a game like God of War that I jjst played through. God of War could be very difficult, but never did I find it unfair or clunky. Often in FF7R I just dont really see any way to take control of the boss fights. It is basically survive, heal and revive a bunch of times, and whittle the bosses away. Which is annoying as hell.
